Nikola Tesla claimed that he picked up signals from outer space. This was when radio was still in the early experimental stages. My guess is that he picked up the signals that can be heard in nature. Radio pollution has all but eliminated the possibility of hearing natural signals in the standard bands, although some hobbyists build ELF, or Extremely Low Frequency, equipment to hear natural radio signals in the handful of cycles (hertz) range.

I've heard at least one actual numbers station, tuned correctly, personally. Kind of weird to think of the spy sitting there and decoding it somewhere. If you cruise the shortwave hobbyist websites you can hear actual numbers stations without all the junk that the maker of those videos threw in. Once upon a time, spies used something called a one time pad to decode the signals. One time pads were so secret that nobody outside of the intelligence agencies really knows even today how they worked. There has long been a rumor that the CIA made a pad that would turn to chewing gum when dunked in water. If anybody starts talking about pads today, you know he's out of the loop. Spies today hook their radios up to laptops, which contain computer programs that translate the numbers into text. When a Cuban spy was caught around 2003, it was found that she had a dongle that connected the earphone jack in her radio to the USB port on her laptop, which had a program to translate the signals into Spanish.

Interesting that I saw this post! I actually discovered those a couple weeks ago myself and I've been obsessed with them ever since! I've been talking about getting a short-wave radio now. I see the beginnings of a new obsession.

Reminds me of the story regarding the American Telephone company back in the 1920's when they set out to discover and eliminate all the causes of static on the lines. They tracked down and solved all but one. That one turned out later on to be distant stars. They had stumbled on Radio Astronomy without knowing it.

No problem. I had heard of these from before this post and since I know there were better recordings out there I figured I would track some down. I never did get to the point of buying any radio equipment to hear them myself though. :( I would assume these will be obsolete as if civilians can buy a satellite phone who knows what the military has cooked up these days.
