anti-NT bashing guidelines?
Just a suggestion for a forum rule or guideline; No generalised NT bashing.
It's really annoying reading posts that tar all NTs with the same brush just because the poster or responders have had bad encounters with some of them. The same people often cry out about the unfairness of aspergers stereotypes.
I know this is a support site, and people here may have had bad experiences with those around them, but I don't think it's healthy to propagate stereotypes of non-autistic people, any more than those of any other minority group (and on WP, NTs happen to be a minority).
By all means, if one NT person or a specific group of people is being obnoxious, it's fair enough to post about them, but I really think posts that denigrate a whole swathe of society are not helping anybody. It's the same with the misogynistic/andronistic posts in the love&dating forum- not all people are the same, and viewing everybody as clones of each other is just going to breed resentment for all non-AS people.
I know this has been discussed before and most people here aren't stupid enough to believe that all NTs fit the stereotypes, but even with caveats such as 'of course there are exceptions', the view that most NTs are the same is being perpetuated.
Anyway, just a suggestion/rant. It may be too hard to enforce, or not wanted by most people.
Although, as you point out, there is no explicit "guideline" about NT-bashing, we (the mods) have never refrained from applying the above rule. (Noting that WP does NOT restrict its membership in any way.)
Personally, I am not in favour of having too many "rules", "terms", "guidelines", etc. I suspect that just having the single rule "Be nice to each other." would be going too far in the other direction - but that's essentially the only rule that is truly needed.
