My parents encouraged the exact opposite when I went off to school. They told me to make sure that I talk to people and go to meals with other people and make study groups and make friends. They didn't seem as concerned about my academics.
The way I see it, parents usually want you to have a happy medium between social and academic, but depending on which side of it you're already focused on, they might seem more like they're supporting the opposite. This isn't an attempt to get you to give up your socializing, it's they're attempt to help you balance between the two because they're not sure you can achieve that balance on your own.
