Bumping old threads

I can't find confirmation if this is okay or not.

In most forums, it's looked down upon and usually breaking the rules. In this, I see it all the time though. Am I right in assuming that it's okay to do so?

Wondering if I can do so. Obviously not a lot, just if I find something in the search I want to post on.

(Of course, this was only for demonstration purposes, and didn't actually "bump" the post. )

I figured that wouldn't be good.

Hence why I specified it to 'old' threads. For example, you want to start a topic on... I don't know, dogs. Instead of starting a new topics, you could use the search engine and find an already existing topic on dogs. The already existing topic was made in 2008, but it would be okay to bump that once, adding your own opinion or whatever, and cause conversation either way.

I'm guessing that's right?

Since we do have a rule against creating multiple threads on the same topic, there will be times it is good to just reply on an existing thread instead of creating a new one. BUT, it does get VERY confusing for members, and I think that anytime a thread that is more than a month old gets bumped (or past the first 2 pages on GA), you should have a solid and good reason.

Don't bring up an old thread just to post, "cool" or "bump" or "like that." Comments should be of substance.

Also, since the original participants are likely to be gone after a certain point, it is especially pointless to offer advice on an old question.

With your example on the dogs, unless there was particularly interesting information in the old thread, I wouldn't pull up something that was written in 2008, for the simple fact that the posters are almost always different than the current active ones, and it is confusing to see the old and gone names. Maybe 6 months to a 1 year for that sort of thing?

It is kind of annoying seeing some very old threads bumped, or but what really annoys me is this one person who is always so rude to people that bump a topic he doesn't like
so what happens is it my mission in life to say bump at least once in most of my posts, but to keep my post in topic, some bumps are nice.

As far as I can tell, Necromancy is not technically against the rules here, but making a habit of it is not a good way to make friends. If you must bump an old thread, don't do it for a one sentence post or to rebut an ancient (3 months or older) posting, it just gets in the way of more relevant threads.

I like to bump the pictures threads and I'll hold on it

I don't want to annoy anybody, it's just that I like a lot those threads.

thanks, peeps. i had this same question. on some forums people get annoyed if you start a new thread instead of resurrecting (well, actually that would be the only other forum i've ever been in). so i never knew how far to dig on WP.
