The security guard at my old school PISSED ME OFF!

Earlier today I went up to my old high school to visit the campus. When I walked in, I asked the security guard sitting near the entrance how to obtain a visitor's pass. He told me that they won't let visitors in because we "have no business being on school grounds" or something like that. Bulls**t, I remember seeing visitors on campus all the damn time when I went there. The security guard was a complete a**hole when he said that. I don't know what his problem is, but he was also rude as hell to one lady talking to him when I came in.

Anyway, I just thought I'd come here and rant.

hey man, look at it from his point of view; his job would probably have been on the line if he'd let a random adult into the high school (and a guy especially, sorry to be sexist). Things might have changed since you were in school.

When I was attending that school, I saw visitors on campus all the time. I have no idea why regulations on visitors to the campus would become more stringent. The school's not that dangerous.



I didn't argue with him at all. The guy just seemed to have a stick up his ass for some unknown reason.

Call the school, and ask what the deal was. maybe they don't know they have a dink on the payroll.

I'm not sure, but I don't think they were worried about the school being dangerous. In this day and age, there's a lot of concern over child molestation and not letting adults onto the grounds where there are children/young teens may be one of the new regulations brought in since you left (maybe there was a scare from one of the previous visitors?)

You know you weren't up to any mischief, but I suppose the whole reason they have a security guard in the first place is to stop tresspassers (and technically, if you aren't a pupil, a parent and have no official buisiness there, there isn't any reason for you to be on site) so as far as he is concerned, he's just doing his job.

Maybe if you really want to visit, you could write an email/letter to the current principal and explain you are a past pupil and just want to have a look see for old time's sake. It's frustrating, but I'd make the email polite as hell if I were you, because if s/he turns around and says 'no', s/he could have you arrested if you set foot on the property without permission (sorry to scare you).

It sounds like he may have been being lazy and making his job easier for himself.

If you weren't wearing a suit and tie (and are young, but not a student) he probably assumed that you had no "good reason" to be there, so he lied and said no visitors at all were allowed. His failure of imagination of legitimate reasons for someone who looks like you to be there will never come back to haunt him (you probably didn't look like you could get him into serious trouble?), so not why take the safe and easy road and lie?

People also sometimes want to see someone argue their position; they take your adamance(sp?) as proof that you are there for legitimate reasons. It made no sense to me when I was younger, but since I spotted the pattern I've noticed a lot of security guard type people doing that. So maybe it was that.

I'm going to talk to some teachers at the school and get their input. I'm determined to visit the school and I will do so, one way or another.

He should have asked your business there if you had not already stated it, but he is correct in what he actually said. Having graduated or quit or whatever, no former student has any more business being there than would a former employee returning to a previous workplace. I used to drive a cab, and even obviously having a flower delivery in my hands did not always get me right on in ... and one time a principal told me she was not sure she really even wanted that clustor of balloons inside her building at all!

Someone needs space, you graciously back off and let them have space. And this, without the intermediate step of deciding whether they 'should' need space or not. Plenty of time later to review the situation.

Also, maybe one of two of your favorite teachers. Maybe an email to them.

My old high school never had a security guard, nor any cameras, nor metal detectors. The only actual thing they did for security was based on the honour system...people came in and checked in with the school secretary. It was a small town and nobody even considered the need for any security measures. As far as criminals go, everyone knew who was who in that town and the secretary would know if the visitor was legit or if it was a pedo or abductor. Many rural schools in Canada are run the same way.

Unless you pre-arrange it with teachers most of the time you won't be allowed to just walk in the school. It's a safety measure for one and at my school unless you clear it ahead of time you can't just walk in. So I wouldn't take it personally.
