The tweets don't contain usernames, and you can easily change Twitter usernames anyway.

I disagree. People have posted highly personal things here with no idea that they would be syndicated on mass market services like twitter and facebook. Like the Facebook integration, it's a gross breach of trust, and shows this site to be utterly untrustworthy. What will be next nasty surprise be?

I think the Facebook integration is stupid, it was me who made the thread opposing it, in fact. But at the end of the day, if you don't click the like button, it won't do anything to you, it's just annoying and generally a bad idea on Alex's part because hardly anyone will use it.

About the tweets - they're not as bad as posting on Facebook because they don't appear on a profile belonging to you, they don't list usernames, they only list the first few words of the post, and the only way you'll even find them is if you search for WP stuff anyway.

The twitter feed is maybe less dangerous than the Facebook integration because most tweets will pass unread. It's still a bad idea.

This is a public forum. It always has been. You knew this when you signed up. Syndication doesn't make it any less private than it already was.

And the twitterbot has existed for years. It's been here longer than you've been a member.

It is, I agree, but at the same time it's not really something to be worried about.

making things clear: i am not worried personally,i just say that it's a sneaky thing to do. why not display the twitterbot next to the forum or something? that way everyone would make an informed decision when they post.

Okay, so what's actually being posted is the subject heading, the first few words of the first post of the thread, and a link to the thread.

And no names appears in the tweets, and no part of any post after the first appears in the tweet.

Seems to me, people who see those tweets are people interested in wrong planet. And if it does get retweeted, well, no different than someone posting a link somewhere else. That's, after all, what these tweets are, links to content, not content.

Doesn't bother me.

I do have one issue with it. I can't see any reason for having this twitter feed other than as a service for those using this message board. So why is is secret? If it's a service for us, why are we not informed of it so that, if we like, we can choose to use it.

And, if it's not a service for us, then I for one would like to who it's for.

Posts don't wind up on twitter. Links to posts are what are on twitter. The link just happens to include a bit of the content, in addition to the subject heading. Not that unusual for someone to quote something when linking it. In this case, the quotes are just less useful than the deliberate ones people sometimes do when sharing a link.


Also seems to me that twitter feed is a lot less public than this messageboard.

"Twatter" is about as useful as Facebook and likely just as evil.
