For some reason sometimes when I am on this site, I see a grey banner at the top of the screen with one word on it, the city I live in. The word is clickable but I'm far too suspicious to click it. I am using Chrome and have AdBlock enabled.

What is this box? How does it know what city I live in? I don't think I like this.

I just disabled adblock and instead of just a grey box with my city in it, it's a banner ad targeted to my city.

So that solves the "what is it" question, but I still wonder how it knows where I live, and I don't like that at all.

It knows where you live based on your IP address. Sounds like a Google targeted advert.
