What is wrong with me trying to get into chat?
I made a username etc but it just ended up a mess.

Can anyone tell me the step by step protocol for getting into a chat on this website?

Much obliged,
Viv

I'm afraid I don't know much about this, but I'll move this thread in a place where hopefully someone else can help.

Here's what I did

* Click 'chat' (under community)

* Click 'chat now'

* Click 'run' at the first prompt

* Click 'no' at the second prompt

If that's not happening, you might need to upgrade your Java?

Yep, tend to get a different crowd in there than on the forum.

Why is this happening in IRC? I tried various names all of which produced the following result:

* Connecting to irc.freenode.net (6667)
-
-jordan.freenode.net- *** Looking up your hostname...
-
-jordan.freenode.net- *** Checking Ident
-
* Identd request from 213.161.196.11
* Identd replied: 63517, 6667 : USERID : UNIX : .
-
-jordan.freenode.net- *** Found your hostname
-
-jordan.freenode.net- *** Got Ident response
-
-jordan.freenode.net- *** Your username is invalid. Please make sure that your username contains only alphanumeric characters.

I've never used the chat here. If I have a conversation it tends to be by swapping PMs or emails. Chat is too instant for my liking. I feel pressured to type something when I'd sooner reflect on what I want to say for a minute.

The chat system uses Freenode's IRC network. If you're having trouble connecting to their server, the appropriate people to ask would be them. http://www.freenode.net

I've taken a look at the chat before - I'm confused about its accessibility and am not that seasoned in technical stuff. Is the Chat feature on this website the only way to access it? I personally would feel slightly uncomfortable to use it if anyone could see it and chip in at will (unlike the forum, where of course you have to be a member). As an aside it may also be worth noting that if you click the chat feature it says there are 3 ways to access it, when there are just two displayed.

Does anyone feel that the chat feature is a bit neglected?

The chat on this site is merely a web IRC client that connects to Freenode and joins a channel (#wrongplanet). Anyone in that channel is a part of the conversation going on, and anyone with an IRC client can connect to the server and start chatting in that channel.

I recommend http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/new2irc.html for more information on what IRC is and how it works.
