o jeepers, didn't mean IE instead of firefox - there is some other browser that techie types use isn't there? like Chrome or Opera or something. maybe i'm mistaken. is my n00biness showing?
Some probably do, but from my experiences Firefox has the edge - probably because it's very nicely tweakable.

As much as I love Firefox for the tweakability, the lagginess of recent versions isn't worth the bother for me, so I've effectively switched to Chrome at the moment.

I mean honesty, even the animated smileys on this forum send my CPU usage shooting up to 50% in Firefox, whereas in Chome, I use hardly any CPU at all doing my basic browsing. It fluctuates a little when I load a page, but that's it.

Anyway, back on topic, I always use underline tags when posting links anyway.

Also, for those who are wary of hyperlinks, I'd like to point out that even if a link is a URL, it could still easily link to another site. See this example: http://wrongplanet.net/

 Yep, good point.
Even when things "obviously" appear to be what they are, they still aren't necessarily that at all...

Dunno what on earth Firefox could be up to if animated smileys have that much of an effect on your CPU usage. That's just odd.
I would add that it doesn't happen here but ... (oops, I just did  )

I always bold links. Like this:

Go ahead, click it.

It may take a few times to work, but keep trying.

:P Psh, nice try. I clicked on "Quote" first to see what's really happening...

Agreed. I have a greasemonkey script that makes my browser *flip out* if the URL in the link title and the URL in the link reference aren't the same (thanks for that, by the way :P)

Very useful stuff - my specific script isn't very useful to the masses, so I'm not going to release it, but I'm sure someone has made something similar on the interwebs.

I don't get why it's happening to me then, because scrolling is also jittery on every page, and when I type in a text box it goes right up, too. I've done a clean install of OS X, disabled all my add-ons, cleared my cache and cookies, the whole lot. Nothing has made FF any more more usable for me.

Strangely enough, it works perfectly when I run it in safe mode, but not when I manually disable every add-on, so I don't think any of those are to blame. What else does safe mode disable that may be causing the browser to lag so much?

Hmm, that's what I'd always thought: it just disables add-ons.
A (very) swift search found this: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode (see dialog graphic) so there appears to be much more going on than just disabling add-ons.

Hmm, might have a go at resetting my settings then. The settings file is from, like, Firefox 3.0, so I'm guessing one of the updates corrupted something at one point.

Cornflake knows better than me about this stuff, but to start with have you done everything on this help page?

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Hig ... ry%20usage

looks like they recommend to make sure all add-ons are up-to-date.

i have to manually update my adobe flash or my entire computer slows down. not sure why the updates aren't happening automatically, or why one slightly older version would cause problems, but for me it made everything run oddly if i don't do it.

The memory usage isn't really that bad, it's the CPU usage that's too high. And I'm only running one add-on, which is up to date. And two plugins (one if which is Flash), which are also up to date.

I have tried underlining a link, but then the link wouldn't work after I submitted it.

Just thought I'd let you all know, I reset my settings to default and it's not fixed anything, and since Mozilla's own forums have done f**k all to help me, I might as well stick to Chrome.

I finally fixed it!

If anyone comes across this because they're trying to fix the problem of high CPU usage in Firefox during general use and when typing, go to Preferences > Advanced > untick "Use hardware acceleration when available"

That fixed the problem for me. I have Firefox 8, and Mozilla do screw with the menus with every new release, but if you can't find the option in Advanced, go through the rest of the preferences until you see it.

(If this doesn't work for you, check your add-ons and such as I had)

Ah-ha! Result. :)

Where can we see it?
Or, can you copy/paste what you did here?
