Yesterday at a b/party.....
How did she react to her own news, her own announcement that the daughter was autistic? If she seemed to be stressed or sad over it, that's one thing. If she seemed to be happy or revel in it, is it possible she has Munchhausens?

She also could have been seeking validation for sending the child away to live because she feels guilty.

Funny readimg all of our guesses of what could be going on in someone's mind!
Here's my guess - she mentions autism because she realizes that the wall of clocks is an unusual thing for a child her daughters age to be into.
When listing the ages, she mentions what age the autistic daughter is as it connects to the conversation with the clocks.
i tell people quite often that my son is autistic. it is a major part of who he is. autism is more important to who he is than his brown hair or hazel eyes, and those things are already out there for people to see. why not point out the important part instead? its not like we can hide it anyway, his autism shows in everything he does. theres no privacy to it. its bouncing, flappy, spinning, stimming all the time for people to see.
i talk about autism because i want people to understand who my son is. i want them to SEE a face of autism, to realize that its smart, funny, interesting, loving, curious, and utterly amazing. my family is open about autism, we tell people often that my SO has autism as well. we have no shame about it, we dont hide it.
we choose our audience to be THE ENTIRE WORLD. put it out there for everyone to see, and maybe the misconceptions will go away. those misconceptions exist because of the secrecy that has surrounded autism for decades. get rid of the secrecy, get rid of the myths.
these kinds of concerns come up on a regular basis here, who do we tell, when do we tell. i love the post on this blog about sharing the diagnosis and putting it out there.

Thanx for all your different input!
This gave me so much to think about....but I will have to ponder longer to sort out some of the questions given to me.....
I don't really know why this upset me...I don't think I was upset, more surprise....maybe because our diagnosis is still recent and this caught me by surprize to hear some one talking so openly about it?
The thing that bothered me wasn't the fact that she spoke about it, but the how she spoke about it....I just thought that she is labelling her child by using words like 'my autistic daughter" surely she is first of all her daughter and secondly...she also suffers from autism? Or to say...she is 12yr old BUT is autistic...it almost gave me the impression that she feels that this daughter is less her daughter because of the autism?
I agree to share info to inform people when it will create a better understanding of the context of behaviour....I think more so when classic autism is involved....but maybe it won't be the first thing to mention with a very high AS child...there is so much more positive qualities to focus on. My sons biggest need is te feel excepted, not singled out or be focused on....so I wouldn't like to put him on the spot by discussing him in so much detail infront of him...and behind him I will always try and be gentle and respectfull of him...
It's like another mom at school who 'announced' to every one that her son was adopted....again I thought that she enjoyed more the attention than what good this will do to her son....my 2 boys is also adopted, but I don't go around telling strangers......it's their story to tell. This backfired on this mom and child...her son needs therapy now because some kids are teasing him.......
