Please consider buying the name www.wrongplanet.com as well as this one.

I hadn't been here in a while, and typed that in and it directed me elsewhere, latched on and gave me a pop up that is probably a virus.

I did not click "OK" so I might've escaped the worst, but someone else might click on that.

Web owners: If you can afford to buy that other name please do!

The best way to avoid getting caught like this is to carefully type the URL and once you're on the correct page, save it as a bookmark. For future visits you only then need to click on that to arrive at the correct place every time.

Out of curiosity I had a look to see what was there.
I'm running Firefox which would normally trap and warn me about pop-ups but it didn't do that - possibly because I'm not running Windows and the website code may only activate those properly under Windows.
But what does appear looks somewhat suspicious and the page code does contain what seems to be a tracking-related URL so it's definitely best to not proceed.
Remember the basic rule for this sort of thing:
There is no such thing as a free lunch.

For the equally curious, here's a screen-shot of what's there (note that this is just an image; no buttons or links are active)

It states that the domain is for sale so this could just be a small money-earner in place until the current owner sells it.

If you use Firefox, you can install something called NoScript. I do not believe Internet Explorer has something comparable. It has saved me lots of trouble, and now I can avoid so many ads that I never had control over before. It's great! Like anything, there is a learning curve for how to use it. But, for what it does, it is setup very well. A lot of sites are not allowed access until you let them. It is 1000 times less likely for a virus to get at you with this because unknown websites are blocked. You will have to guess at which sites to unblock when you watch videos with flash or such, and you're much more likely to allow an ad in by accident and probably not a virus because the virus files are probably something that you never intended to open to begin with. Without NoScript, ads come in left and right just from visiting some common websites, and they can slow your computer down. (blah blah blah)
