There are pun reasons for why Santa Claus is also Father Christmas. The simplest and most realistic one is that father could not buy the presents until nearly midnight.

I'm still trying to get over my grandmother being the victim of a hit-and-run ... there were hoof-prints on her forehead and incriminating Claus marks on her back.
