Hey everyone, I think this would make an awesome feature to wrongplanet. Being able to connect your existing wrongplanet account to your Facebook account so things like your avatar/DP are automatically changed to be the same as your Facebook and more features.

They tried linking Facebook here and it was almost universally hated, most people see this as a support site and the last thing they want is their emotional or physical troubles being broadcast on social media

Many people do not have a Facebook, or Twitter or (whatever) account, and neither do they want to include the pervasive, information-gathering and all-knowing Facebook in their lives here.
What is it with this obsessive need to share every facet of one's life on-line? :?

I completely agree. Also, Facebook causes more trouble than good. The staff are uncaring, half-hearted, and allow horrific, discriminatory, vulgar, and offensive content to be posted without any sort of moderation.

Apart from sharing Cornflake's lack of understanding of this "Hey Mr Paedophile! Come stalk me!" attitude, I have a serious, deep-rooted loathing of Facebook, it's unhealthy amount of influence over society, and most of all, it's sh*tty, horrible staff. :wall:

Sparrow40k, you might want to try the WrongPlanet.net Facebook group if you want to mingle the two together

^ This. I tried having a facebook account for a few months under a pseudonym but got sick of "friend" requests from strangers; invites to inane games and my wall being full of crap by people I didn't know. I don't give a s**t what some stranger ate for breakfast or what their favourite singer is. Facebook constantly changed the user interface and bombarded me with email about stuff I wasn't interested in... I tried changing my settings to minimize this but they continue anyway so I've just flagged all emails from facebook as spam and they get deleted on the server without even being downloaded to my computer. I honestly don't know what people see in facebook.

Thank you, I might have to look into that.

I'd also recommend Third Planet: Autism Support Community. A lot of WP members (including myself) are there.

As for the idea of linking Facebook to Wrong Planet, I say hell no!

Linking WrongPlanet to make users register with a Facebook account or to merge it, I can honestly say I don't like this idea very much especially when it shares the things on there that I don't want everyone to see.

But there are WrongPlanet groups on Facebook which is cool.

I don't want my school mates or family seeing my posts on here.

I detest facebook. A number of my relatives are on it, but I refuse to join it to keep up with what they are doing.

Wow, and I thought I was anti-Facebook! Good to see I'm not alone here. I agree, logging in with Facebook is not a good idea. Not only because of Facebook specifically, but in general logging into one site with the credentials of another causes more problems than it solves. It might work if there was one identity provider that was trusted by the entire Internet and by its users, but such a thing will never exist.

Tell me about it.

I used Facebook to play the Dragon Age II flash game and apparently my profile was used for advertising, as I just received a note indicating such and that I was eligible for settlement money due to a class action lawsuit (link)

I thought it had to be a hoax, but apparently it is real.

And I agree with Cornflake about not linking Facebook to here.

The last thing I want is for the nosy FB friends of my mother's to find out "more about me" on WP. Or for certain of my friends to discover my AS.

If facebook is offered as an alternative method of logging in that would be ok, if it become the only way that would not.

Given facebook's privacy failings in the past I would not want my (real name based) account linked with my membership here.
