Doctor Who: Who is Clara Oswald?

Don't know whether this thread has come up yet. But what are your theories on who is Clara Oswald

My theory

After watching tonights episode and a clue somewhere in the episode I reckon Clara is somehow the Doctor's granddaughter it would make sense as this year is the 50th anniversary and the show will be back at where it was in 1963.

Or she could be the daughter of someone he once knew, from an older series. But I haven't seen much of the older series.

I think she's probably something like Bad Wolf. She's being placed through time, probably in order to catch the Doctor's attention.

She cannot be a time lord due to the the who "girl who died twice" and he also followed her growth.


I think she is the gateway between dimensions. Each one of her we met are from different ones (this will be how the other doctors will show up)

My other theory; she an effect of the GI. The Doctor was weakened at her death during the snowman attack to the point the GI took foothold in him bring her back Time after time for who knows why.

Some thoughts on why the later theory won't/will work.

The GI is dead " No he is not. You can not kill an idea"

We met Clara on the delak planet first and victoren times later "time happens like that. Past then future. The GI met them in the past and worked that way"

Why do I keep bring up the GI? " he has shown up twice and has shown up two out of the three times we met The Claras"

"The Doctor controlled by the GI? Ha it only goes after weak souls "Yes. Like the time the Doctor was locked in his tower or his new companion died? Also am I the only one that remembers when the host was emptied the GI took over his body? Like the doctor feeding grandfather his past lives?

No sound theory of my own yet, but I think it has something to do with the theme of memory:

Clara wiped the daleks' memories

Clara's memories are obviously powerful, as (spoilers!) in the Rings of Akatan (I know that's not spelled right) she saves the Doctor through her memories of her mother.

OK, feel free to poke holes through it.

They already did this with the Ponds and I would be sad if they do it again.

I don't think it is her, but he still has his clone/daughter out in the universe. I'm waiting for her to show up.

At the time, I thought his reference to his granddaughter was conspicuous, if he was referring to Susan. She appeared in the Five Doctors, but I cannot recall any other time his granddaughter has ever been mentioned.

no go for her as well. Her death in the snowman had no time lord regeneration and if she had ANY time lord DNA the daleks would have done things worse then convert her (which still bugs me. We get "pure" daleks and they turn around muddying the dalek army?)

During the episode of Journey to the center of the Tardis. Did anyone notice the clue in the Library? The person who likely wrote the gallifrian war book was the Doctor. He would not have wrote it in English. They did not show the pages. So you might let it slip by you. (Some people have mentioned it and think it was a mistake, but I dont think so).The tardis does not translate Gallifrian. But she read the book. So could she be Gallifrian? Also they played an audio clip from the first doctor when he was talking to his granddaughter Susan. Whatever happened to Susan? She was a timelord as well. Also Clara had mentioned in the past carnation that she was born behind the face of Big Ben. Timelords can be made human and their memories stored in a pocket watch. How about bigger? So my question is if a timelord is made human and dies. What happens? Maybe they keep being reborn until they are made a timelord again?

Very interesting, I was wondering about the book as well. As for his grand child she should be dead as all time lords are..Right now my hope is Clara is the Tardis reborn and leaked through time when the Tardis died.

I think you're both on to something herebedragons and unipeg.

My theory is that she or a future/prior incarnation of her hacked the source-code of the universe. This follows along the lines of her inexplicable abilities demonstrated by both current and future self and that she reappears through time. She could be the GI itself, or related to it in general as well. Due to the nature of both of these things she could be a time-lord that discovered/altered this source code and thus can read the books in the library, or perhaps knew the language in a prior/future incarnation.

And if you remember in The Rings of Akhaten. The doctor mentioned his Granddaughter. Which I thought at the time was odd considering he never had mentioned her before since his return in 2005.
The master was turned into a human. Why not the doctors granddaughter? Too many granddaughter clues to ignore. And yes I have noticed all of the roses. Some think to tie in with Rose Tyler but I think not.
Susans Galifrain name was Arkytior which stood for "Rose".
