outbox is for pm's that were made by you but not opened yet by the reciepient it stays there until he or she opens the pm then outbox is cleared of that message, maybe its a possibiltiy that the user your pmming stopped using wp??
the sentbox is for pms that were read.
hope this has helped troubleshoot the reason why the pm stayed in outbox
