I'm wondering if anyone here has had coaching or attended any kind of training on assertiveness skills, as an adult?

What sort of training did you attend, and was it useful? What were the pros and cons and would you recommend it to a person with AS?

Thanks.

I found self-help books useful.

I went to a Women In Business seminar. It changed my life! They had role playing and provided examples on how to solve problems in tense situations. I needed an example that I could use going forward. The instructor was a woman with amazing confidence.

It worked for me. Assertiveness is a state of mind, not just a random attitude. It starts by recognizing your self worth and establishing personal boundaries.

Some people are the windshield, some people are the bug squished on the windshield. I was the bug, now I am the windshield:-)

I recommend you interview someone with confidence and ask them how being assertive has impacted their life.

In my opinion, Yes, AS people would benefit from assertiveness training.

No, I had a best friend in high school who used to fight all my battles for me. Verbal and physical. She kept trying to get me to stand up for myself and then finally told me that if I got my ass kicked one more time by somebody without fighting back that she would kick it twice as bad. I was more afraid of her skills than anybody else's, so I fought back. Turns out years later she told me she never would have hurt me, but hey, it worked.

Fast forward to when I was 30 years old and working at a New Age health food store. The owner decided to send all the female employees to an assertiveness training seminar. Most were those quiet and polite New Age types. And then there was me. He told me I couldn't go. He said if there was a class that taught the opposite he would send me, but he said he doubted I would show up for it.
