Ratings. The more popular a news team is, the higher the viewer ratings.

Whenever one news network develops a news team that is more popular than the others, those other news networks are quick to produce their own copies.

Thus, you have attractive women who wear fashionable clothing flirting with their male counterparts, who wear tailored suits and conservative haircuts, and who look like they have just stepped out of the pages of Gentleman's Quarterly..

They are trained to speak with a Midwestern accent because it is the most understandable to all American dialects. Conversely a Boston accent or even a southern drawl might be hard to understand for many other people not familiar with those modes of speech.

And, ironically, if you are Canadian you have a much better chance of getting into the business than being from the USA. That Canadian look and sound buried in your speech is considered more desirable than someone raised in the USA who speaks proper English.

In any job where it's more about image than substance, this holds true.

The accent you are referring to is called the General American accent. Strangely, this is the accent I have despite being at least a 5th-generation Texan.

I have heard that in the UK, prospective reporters have to pass an enunciation test before they can be hired.
