You never give up, do you?

Here, let me explain something. PHP-Nuke is not written in PHP5 - Thus, a lot of the functions, etc have been depreciated. As has been said many many times, the site is being re-developed (I sincerely hope in PHP 5.5 at least), and it will resolve all these issues.

Patience, padawan.

Then they need to push that damn update out, before this thing completely crashes. Honestly you sound like a band member on the Titanic.

Right now nine out of ten tries I'm getting 504 Gateway Time-out. The pages are taking one to two minutes to load, and even then are not loading completely. The damn emoticons won't even load. Why should anyone be patient with this type of crap? And for how long should we be patient waiting for this update, that may happen this year, or may happen next year, or may happen the year after?

I develop my own Autism based site for a crust (though I lose more than I gain from it) - I have some idea what I am talking about...

FYI: Smilies: Image

If you've got an issue with it, there are other Autism boards that would love to have you as a member.

I hope your site runs better then this one. Because if it doesn't, you should find a new line of work.

Believe me, it hasn't gone down, or stopped working in 3 months (since I last did a restart). Generally, if I do something, then I inform the members - WELL in advance.

There's a clue in there which indicates that the extreme errors you're experiencing aren't being caused directly by the WP system: "gateway" - it indicates there is a problem with some machine located between yours and the WP system.

A server (not necessarily a web server) is acting as a gateway or proxy to fulfil the request by your browser to access WP, but this server did not receive a timely response from an upstream server it accessed to deal with your HTTP request. Note that "an upstream server" doesn't necessarily mean "the WP server" - there are further systems your request travels through before hitting WP and any one of those might experience problems, resulting in the gateway timeout error.

I've seen that error when accessing WP only a handful of times over the past year so if it was being caused directly by WP, we should all be seeing that error nine times out of ten. It's also something I've seen occasionally with other sites and in all but a very few cases, a retry resolves the issue.

Sometimes pages take a few seconds to load here and that varies by time of day (ie. number of active users) but in general, there is no other issue with pages loading and I have never seen a case where the emoticon window fails to fully populate with icons.

Ignoring for a moment the annoying intermittent errors caused by poor database design and weight of users (the various "couldn't load/can't access" errors etc), I'd say that while WP is not one of the fastest sites I've seen, it is functional - and considerably more than just "mostly functional".
There's nothing special about my access to WP: it's through an ordinary domestic ADSL connection at about 10 Mbit/sec downstream, but it seems clear to me that my complete lack of the extreme problems you're experiencing can only show that they are not being caused directly by the WP system.

You doubtless remember the number of people posting to complain about the aggressive CAPTCHA system, and the number of people posting showed this to be a universal problem which was directly caused by the WP system.
I don't know what's going on with your connection but going by the lack of similar complaints about gateway timeouts and incredibly slow page loads, it surely can't be a universal problem caused directly by WP - there's no way of missing nine out of ten accesses generating gateway errors or incomplete page loads taking one to two minutes. 8O

1. My computer and my internet is running fine. 2. Other websites are loading fast and with out problem. After I posted that, I left and posted on other forums without issues. So the problem seems to be limited to wrongplanet.net. 3. I'm not the only one experiencing increased problems with WP. I suspect there might be many more. I think most WP members just accept these type of problems as normal.

I had the same problem earlier today Max000 is describing. This was the first time ever.

In which case, why am I not seeing the same severe problems that you are?

No one is denying there are problems, but now you're referring to the irritating intermittent problems - which are just that: irritating and intermittent.
I can't imagine anyone here keeping quiet if they were experiencing nine out of ten accesses generating a gateway timeout error and an incomplete page taking one to two minutes to load - can you?

Yes, I've seen it too - a handful of times over the past year, but never for nine out of ten accesses.
I've also seen it occasionally on other sites. There are many systems involved with connecting point A to point B and occasionally, something splutters - but what Max000 describes is clearly more than a splutter, yet I don't see it - despite connecting to the same WP that he is.

I can't speak for others, but that is the reason that I started this thread.

You're connecting from an ISP that is known to proxy connections, and is known to cache temporary failures.

Yes, I understand that and how annoying it must be - but I'm just trying to get you to see that your particular problems are both extreme and apparently unique, and caused by something other than WP misbehaving.
The CAPTCHA issue was a "solvable annoyance", only (hah!) requiring the correct input from a user: it didn't cause timeout errors or ridiculously slow and incomplete page loads - yet this forum almost (and justifiably) burst into flames because of it.

But sliqua-jcooter gives an exact reason why your connection is causing so many huge problems: temporary glitches you would have probably never seen are being made persistent because they're being cached by your ISP.
