To transfer or not to transfer universities?
Hi so I'm currently studying at a uni away from home because I did not get into my first choice school when applying directly from high school. I applied for transfer and got accepted there, and I'm having a difficult time deciding whether I should come back or not.
Some reasons I'm thinking of transferring is because my current school is far from home and requires a lot of time to get there. (Few hours flight and then few hours bus ride lol.. ). Also, I've felt overwhelmed and homesick sometimes when being away from home (especially first semester when I was there for an entire 3.5 months straight). The school I just got accepted into is a bus ride from home, which means I will be staying at home. Never wanted to really study away from home, but not really a choice when I originally got rejected back in high school. And I'm weird... I'd rather not be surrounded by other students 24/7 haha..
But if I do transfer, I would be leaving friends I made in res. Not sure if I really want to leave them this early, they can be fun to be with sometimes, but they've also been... um.. not too nice a few times.. lol. But if I transfer back home, I'm worried I may be a complete loner, as meeting ppl as a commuter is tougher, and i'm sooo socially awkward and quiet. I had signed a rental lease for a house with my friends so it would mean they would have to sublet. (But then again, I would've needed somewhere to live if I didn't get accepted for transfer and had to stay lol) Worst case scenario, they can't find a replacement and I have to just pay for the rent but would still save a lot of money in the long run if I transfer back home.
So what do you guys think? Should I just transfer schools so I can be at home? Or should I stay at my current school? Thoughts are appreciated ![]()
My college was about 1 1/2-2 hours from my home so I lived on campus.
I can tell you that I do not for a moment regret living on campus. I think that it is a valuable social experience, and here, 10 years later, the friends I made that 1st semester, one is my room mate, and one I talk to every day.
I did a program called National Student Exchange, and I went to a new school, and was a commuter. It didn't work out as well as I hoped.
Homesick happens to everyone, and everyone needs their alone time. Friends go through good times and rough patches, but if they are friends they work it out.
I think you have to consider carefully what you want. It does sound like you enjoy having friends, and having friends can improve your social awkwardness, if you move home, you might find it easy to just stay at home when your not in class.
