All the posts are marked as read when I go to a board, such as the General one, and I had just been on the page for the first time in a month! Is this a bug?

Probably - it's certainly unreliable.
I generally go by the markers shown on the index inside a given forum, but even that is quirky.
Looking down the right-hand column of "Last Post" date/time seems the only reliable indicator.
