I need to do some very basic editing (just cutting frames out) on an mp4 file. Does anyone know of any freeware (or even a trial version of a non-free one, as long as it will enable saving) that will do this? I'm running Windows Vista home edition.

If cutting frames is all you need, then try YAMB.

If you need something more advanced, VirtualDub is a good one. But to open mp4 files with this program, you need to install mp4 source filter and the corresponding codecs.

Try downloading a converter for the MP4 file and convert it to like a WMA so you can use movie Maker in Vista. I'm pretty sure you can use Movie Maker to cut frames out of a video because I know in Windows XP you can do it. I'm sure Movie Maker is not much different in Vista (features wise),
