Hi,

I´m new here.

I´m single, having a job, but living almost isolated except for some family contacts.

I few years ago, I think in 2002 or so I watched an interview on television with a man who had AS. This was the first time for me I realised the concept of autism was much broader then I was aware on that moment. Until then my view of autism was that of people with a very low IQ, locked up in themselves and ret*d.

This person was almost normal in my view, although a litle bit weird. He liked standing in the rain, which I don´t particurly like and he had some obsessions.

This was a litle bit of a shock to me. If this person was autistic, I could be evenly well. From that moment on I searched the internet and books to know more about this ´disorder´.

When I look at the diagnostic criteria I fit wel in the description as far as social traits is concerned. On the other hand I´m not moving clumsy. On the contrary, I´m rather handy. I´m not very obsessive, although my attention shifts now and then to a new topic I spent most of my time on.

So, maybe I´m an NT with autistic traits or asperger with NT-traits, I don´t know. It is ´pervasive´ anyway in the sense it affects my whole live.

I´m not officially diagnosed or planning to be at this moment. I don´t think people associate my behaviour with autism, because the general concept of autism is that of ´rain man´. Rather they see me as introvert or shy. What they actually see is me as the main character in my own act.

So much about me for the moment.

What made him weird on the TV show?
What characteristics did he exhibit?
How did he communicate, Hmmmmmm?
a)...passive(must be asked to answer a question)
b)...active(will volunteer a answer or a question!)

Using what traits that you do have....
1)...how do they affect you?
2)...what traits do you exhibit other than
social? (hmmmm? eyecontact, ect...)

Hi, Nicolai. Welcome!

That's the way to look at people with AS! We are normal people!

Actually I don´t know where all the information in my brains comes from, because I don´t remember everything and information in my brains mixes. This was what was in my brains at that time. When I say the general concept of autism is that of ´rain man´ this is an assumption, because I can´t ask all these people and I don't like asking people things. Maybe I´m wrong asuming what is in my brains is in the brains of most people.

This was quit a long time ago and I can't remember all the details. I remember his speech felt strange, but I can't exactly tell what was strange. The reason I tell about this tv/show is, that on that moment I made the link between autism and my self, which I didn't before.

My traits are mainly social. I have not much difficulty making eyecontact, but I don't particurly like it. The problem with making eyecontact is that people assume you want a conversation with them, which is seldom the case, so I try to avoid this on moments I don't want to talk with them, which is most times.
The social effects are I don't have friends. To be honest I don't know what 'having friends' is like. All the time I've lived independantly I haven't ever had a friend at my home. But I have to admit I didn't try to make friends either, because I like being alone.
I have difficulty asking people things. Most information I get passive. When you are at work you need a lot of information. Much of this information is only in the heads of other people, so I have to ask them, which can be pretty exhausting for someone like me. Also they skip details I need, because they think I know them already and then I have to ask these details again. Or they tell it to fast, so you have to ask to repeat it. There can be a lot of reasons why people tell the information in a way you don't understand it. Maybe they want to keep it for themselves, because having information that others don't have give them some power or maybe they think you are smarter than you really are. Maybe they want you to feel stupid or want to prevent you from coming back, because they get exhausted themselves. All these things I'm asking my self so most times I'll try finding the information in an other way, but that takes more time and the possibility exists you can't find the information in that way. This is also a reason why I don't like to much changes at a time, because you'll have to find out everything again.

I'm a litle bit confused by this question, because I don't understand whether you are asking why he liked standing in the rain or whether you want to know why I don't like it to stand in the rain.
I don't know why he liked standing in the rain. This was one reason why I think he was weird.
I don't like standing in the rain, because I don't like wet clothes and I am getting cold.

Why was he in the rain?

The man on tv had an obsession with meteorological phenomena and with painting. He was sort of an artist.

Until very recently this was my view too. I've learned a great deal in the last two years.

Welcome to the boards, Nicolai. I hope you enjoy your time here.

As I've said somewhere else, people with AS are socially, not mentally, ret*d.

Ok! It isn't natural? For autism in general
eyecontact isn't natural! I will assume? this
applies to you!
