Why are some usernames bolded?

I've been noticing that some usernames are bolded. Is there a reason why?

I often thought it could be to do with the fact that the threads are new, but then even if some people were to post a thread, their names does not appear in bold letters.

I figured this out in another thread. All members who joined after February 2, 2012 are in bold for some reason or other.

So, no one really knows? Does anyone know what forum software this site uses? That might lead to the answer.

edit: apparently it's some sort of wordpress plugin, because it looks like that in the html: a bunch of "wp-content" references, but people are saying that it's phpBB so idk?

But people who joined in 2015 or late 2014 aren't bolded. And I think all moderators are bolded.

It doesn't make sense! I've always had the impression that whatever this forum software was, that it's a bit screwy.
