Oh yeah... The end of the Mayan Calendar and (according to their mythology) the date on which the circle of life and death comes to an apocalyptic halt, destroying the entire world.

My history teacher in 8th grade went into great detail about that. When she first mentioned it, however, she was referring to a time capsule containing the results of the investigation into the JKF assassination, which wouldn't be opened until a while after 2012.
