I have to disagree with kraftiekortie on the car thing. First, women are more at risk for crime when on foot than men are, it's a simple fact. Second, if you are having a lot of pain, standing around in the cold waiting for buses is not indicated, nor is carrying groceries back to your home on foot. It doesn't need to be a prime ride; a dependable commuter car with a little body damage might be affordable. I don't know your finances, but I would try to factor it into your budget if you can. Another consideration is parking, both at home and at work. But in general, having a car is in my view nearly a necessity.

Kraftiekortie lives in NYC where car ownership is at least as much hassle as benefit and where public transportation is very adequate.

I get what you mean, BeaArthur.

I know how it feels to wait for a bus in the rain/snow (even though I've never had back problems).

But:

1. She has a 30-minute bus ride.

2. She lives in a medium-sized city. She's not out in the sticks.

3. She'll have high insurance rates because (I assume) she hasn't driven in a while.

4. Think about car maintenance....it's expensive.

(Unless Canada subsidizes some people as far as car stuff is concerned).

True.

Too true.

This is less of an issue now that Henry is gone.

I'm not, but the call centre is out in the sticks. Way out by the highway.

Parking is included in my rent and is not an issue at the work site. However, my current finances make car ownership impossible. Ideally, financially, I would get a car. With my back it would be a huge help. Maybe if things go well with the new job, I could consider getting one in a year's time.
