so, from what I've read a new forum is out of the question, but I'd like to ask if at some point in the future you'd consider a diet and meds forum.
a lot of this goes on the main autism discussion, and quicky gets lost, and repeated. Also these discussions are spread across the forums, with some in parenting, etc...

I think one forum for these discussions would make it easier to find out, and keep track of how people are responding to the various meds and diet regimes which seem to be coming out every week. The main reason I think a dedicated forum would help, would be a slower turnover than the primary forum, which would mean that people could make how they are progressing on a diet/medication known, to the rest of the WP community.

but anyway, it's just a suggestion, let me know what you think people.

I think it's a good idea.

I would love to hear how other people are modifying their diets in order to feel and function better. My toddler has been greatly helped by going gfcf and my own symptoms make me suspect I ought to ditch all grains myself (do kind of a modified paleo diet). Anyhow, it would be most helpful to have a dedicated area for such discussions, or at least more people posting on these sorts of issues.

But there would be arguments on how it's not good to give out medical advice.

Well as long as nobody starts saying "Do this, it will help you," it wouldn't really be advice. More a sharing of experiences. Comparing notes, so to speak. That, and some disclaimer, like all of the diet / weight loss commercials have, would be easy enough to do. The whole "Consult your physician" bit.

Wouldn't these make good stickies in the Haven?

Not a bad idea. A whole forum seems WAY overkill.

Only, I have seen discussion of meds in both the Members Only forum, the General Autism Discussion forum, and the Haven.

Could have some liability issues with people recommending diets/meds or prompting others to go on them to disastrous effect.

We can at least have a disclaimer, saying that "advice in this thread is intended to be anecdotal. Those concerned should consult a doctor and/or pharmacist before starting such a regimen".

i asked a question about diet and OCD a few months ago.
it got about 3 replies, obviously it might have been because it was me, also i did stipulate that only people who know what they are talking about should reply.
but still..

One doesn't need to be a doctor to state "Don't hit your foot with a hammer". There are a lot of questions that are answered by people who are going on only friend's advice or an "I heard that..."

My first stop for medical things is always Medline Plus
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus

No bogus remedies. No magic cure-alls.

There is TONS of info there. It's the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. It will link over to other legitimate sites, like the Mayo Clinic. You can look up medications.

There is health. Diet. Research. News.

That initial site alone will answer most everyone's questions, if they follow the links.

I use it for my own medical problems. I become familiar with the latest in treatments. Side effects. And the terminology. So when I DO visit my doctor, I am up to date with the same kinds of info he would get.

It makes my visits with the doctor more productive. I'm not a doctor, but the doctor says I am an ideal patient. Because I show an interest in my own well being. I take the time to read up on my condition. The whole visit could be spend with me asking him "what does that mean?". I already know what some of the things are. I will ask about medications and before taking them, I will read about them.

We can all be informed consumers of medical products, just from that one site, at home.
