I agree AB. However I have no idea how difficult/expensive it would be to create a workable feature to add an effective blocking function. I think it would save decent members a lot of distress caused by the very few who go out of their way to spread illwill instead of fair comment.

if FB can have blocking, why can't WP?

I'm not sure that an echo chamber is healthy either overall. It certainly feels better, but look how things have become when one side ignores opposing views on other platforms. How can anyone stay objective if you simply ignore others with differing opinions even exist.

it goes beyond differences in opinion, some folk are defiantly cruel and know just how far to push people. suspensions/temporary bans don't persuade these people to let up on the mean. again, if FB can do this, then WP should be able to as well. WP is supposed to be a refuge from the outer world.

I do not disagree with you auntblabby. I was playing devil's advocate. Your reasons to do so are valid. I was simply saying, sometimes it's good to hear people out, especially if you don't agree with them because it helps to keep you centered and at worse reaffirming your own confirmation bias. It is good to challenge ideas and retain debate, but not at the cost of being maliciously hurt in the process.

yes, you are right, I would not promiscuously use the block feature other than on the worst offenders who reliably spew venom. those people can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

We won't be getting any cool new features because Alex has apparently abandoned the forum...unless he hands control over to someone else. We're lucky to have basic functionality.

The OP started this topic about personal comments, not debate, so what you are talking about doesn't really apply to the situation.

I think Zuckerberg has a teeny weeny bit more money to spend on his webiste than Alex

What, like $100 to hire a PHP monkey to edit the code? It's a matter of using the Foe feature (which isn't really doing anything useful today) and not displaying anything written by those people, it can even be done clientside using javascript to hide CSS elements tagged with a specific username. This is not brainsurgery.

I sure hope some community-minded volunteer can persuade The Creator to allow some ad-hoc tinkering with the code in the service of this goal.

I have no idea about the person's financial situation, but 100$ is a lot of money for many people and he (I assume, I'm not entirely sure since Alex is a rather gender neutral name... isn't it?) might not have that kind of money to spare and even if he did he probably has a life he'd rather spend it on. Those of you who think of this as a problem, how about asking if you could donate money to update the site in a way that benefits you? Or create a forum of your own that has the kind of functions and rules you want?

Bla blah bla, it was an example. The site is running ads btw, and He has show his face earlier.

Visit the main site and not just the forum and you'll find lots of pictures of people involved with the forum.

This site while I love it, is total crap in the way it runs from a technical aspect. It needs to be completely reformatted. Any attempted alterations to it as is, will probably just make things worse.

There was a big upheaval a few years back to get WP functioning properly, like most any other forum site out there, and this is it, this is the new and improved product believe it or not.

Apologies for not giving up on you as easily as you do.

You are the only one who points out that your life is "crap," not me. I've never once said you just need to be normal and do normal people stuff.

I've suggested & encouraged that you do something/anything via any treatment method to deal with your clinical depression and suicidal thoughts as almost any change would be for the better of your health, mood, and quality of life.

edit: Long posts tend to be refuting your false statements.

As for everyone else posting in this thread, I've never once posted any sort of ill will against sly. He's the only one who speaks negatively about himself. It's also become apparent, after 5+ years of the same posts requesting help or advice, that sly still has zero interest in following anyone's advice or help to improve himself or his situation. He seems to only post seeking sympathy & only responds positively to textual pats on the head. This very thread is sly seeking sympathy for the oh so terrible influence I am on him by suggesting that he can in fact treat his depression/anxiety, begin his own healing process, and in time think & feel signficantly better than he does in his nearly constant suicidal state.

Definitely one of those "sorry, not sorry," moments, as I am definitely not sorry for suggesting that a suicidally depressed person could experience relief from their depressive thoughts by finding some method that works to treat their depression. That's not ill will at all. That's patience and compassion. But if you don't support sly's distorted view of the world and offer sympathy when he complains, all of the sudden in his mind you mean him harm. Couldn't possibly be further from the truth.

If someone doesn't want your advice, stop giving it. To continue doing so is harassment. It doesn't matter whether you think your advice is good.

So then don't post threads on public forums asking for advice. As is pointed out in this thread, and as I've posted before, he's not obligated to read it nor follow it. I've suggestion he try someone/anyone else' advice, not mine.

Besides sympathy, I'm not sure what he's looking for on these forums - especially when he's soliciting advice.

Instead of suggesting that someone can in fact overcome their depression and think & feel better, are we supposed to agree with his suicidal statements & encourage that? Again, one of those "sorry, not sorry," moments. I'd rather sly was alive to be annoyed that I suggest he can feel better than agree with him on anything of that nature.
