I've always found that I'm loneliest when I'm surrounded by people, but my brain/senses are too overwhelmed to actually interact. So long as I've got nature and some kind of musical instrument close to hand, I'm quite content to have no company for long periods, and I always have been so far as I can remember.
This. I pretty much have not had a single lonely day since I gave up on expecting reciprocity from people and started focusing on animals and plants and reading and caretaking my home... don't misunderstand, I'm casual-friendly enough to pass, and I know my neighbors, I just don't ever expect anything from them or anyone else. If I need help, I know I'll have to hire it. That's just how it is, for whatever reason. And it works well enough.
