This character surely does not meet any of the most prominent characteristics of autism. August actually connects with the other characters in the story quite easily, communicates with everyone very well too. Not only that, his facial expressions are not hindered or flat by any means, he consistently has an extremely expressive face, almost throughout every minute of the story. The only time his face is flat, or stern, is when he’s laying in bed at night, confronted by a bully at the boy’s home. But he still responds to the bully, and is truly fearless all the while. All in all, August Rush does not typify any major characteristic of autism. But he is bright, almost beyond measure, and shows himself to be an amazingly loving and responsive child.
