Peter Pan syndromes are a class of syndromes where the person is developmentally challenged from entering normal adulthood. This includes Autism, Williams and Downs.

I would trust Mamoud Achmadinajab before I would trust the NY Times.

I necrobumped this piece of autism history from 2012 to see how it panned out.

Looking back on it the two New York Times articles posted by the OP portraying Aspergers as a overdiagnosed fad was an indication the gig was up, that those fighting to retain the Aspergers diagnosis were fighting a lost cause.

Dhawal’s prediction did come true to some extent IMHO not so much from a concerted media campaign to demonize the term but by propogating the socially ackward genius stereotype which is not representive of most Aspies which has made many Autistic people hate the term.
