I’m starting my first real job in a couple days, which is as a part-time proofreader for a publishing company. I have a lot of experience working on school newspapers, but I get the feeling that an actual professional environment will have different unwritten rules and social dynamics. When I worked on the newspapers at school, I could work in a team, but I didn’t really do the small talk stuff; I just did my job and did it very well. But I’ve heard that in a professional setting, you have to engage in social politics to be accepted. But what sorts of things would I be expected to do? I don’t have a clue, and I’m afraid I’ll break some unwritten rule and eventually be reviled.

I do my best to make small talk and interact with people. Bosses and coworkers don't like it when you are quiet. It weirds them out. I will never really fit in, but I try my best to be professional and get along with people. It always helps to know who is best buddies with the bosses because they may influence how the boss feels about you.

There is no cookie cutter answer for your question. What I mean is that every different workplace has its own personality. Don't isolate from people (easier said than done) but don't be a brown nose either. Just remember that everyone is human and we all bleed red. Don't get involved in any possible gossiping, that only spawns negativity. I'm just providing my own advice, you can take it or leave it and if you leave it I wouldn't be mad one bit. Who am I to preach though, I haven't worked since 2016
