I was just filling out a job application, and part of it had me choosing two out of four options for what I wanted most in my workplace. One of the options was "I want a position where I can work independently." Honestly, that sounds great to me. But that was after reading page after page of descriptions of how everyone there works and cooperates as a team, so I ended up not choosing it because it sounded like a "gotcha!" answer. What do you think, is wanting to work independently a bad thing?

What type of work were you applying for, yeah what i learned in general when you not a "team player" its considered a bad thing.
If you are not a "peoples person" then it means your a trouble maker or whatever stereotype they use.

Its totally black and white thinking IMO.

Certainly most of the actual jobs I have had and applied for value teamwork rather than individuality and actually penalized individuality, even if what you are doing is better than everyone else. Maybe in fact BECAUSE you are doing better than everyone else. I'm afraid I was considered a "trouble maker" as per above post.

I was not happy working until I started working for myself. I still make trouble :D , but for a good cause.

Yep....unfortunately, the "team" is of the utmost importance in many work situations.

Weren't you working at WalMart? What sort of job is it that you're applying for?

Yes, they want a "team player."

This would be a decent step up from WalMart. Good luck!

My parents disagree. My dad says I don't know enough to do this job, even though it only lists a high school diploma as a requirement. My mom knows the doctor I'd be scribing for, and says she's impossible to work with. She got fired from the doctor's office by mom works at because she was just a real nasty woman.

How much more money would you get from this job?

Don't know. Haven't been able to ask yet.

I would not put too much weight on the descriptions that HR gives for the job though as those are usually fluff and nonsense anyway. If the job is not suited to you or if the people you work with/for turn out to be dirtbags, just get in, get paid, and get out. If they are going to be dishonest on their end when describing the job or treat you badly, you should not feel bad when things "don't work out" and you should have no guilt about taking everything you can (legally) from them on your way out.

Just saw that the job is being a medical scribe. Just check the "team player" box and then proceed to the reality that they did not mention in the description which is that your job is essentially to write things down for patients and not be a complete jerk to them. That's pretty much it. Beyond that, nobody will really want to have much if anything to do with you. Just fly under the radar and avoid office politics as much as you can.

Good luck man.

This job, although it only requires a high school diploma, does also require some clinical experience. Do you have that?

They want someone who is pleasant to the patients and also interfaces nicely with co-workers. This seems like it might not be the best choice for an autistic person.

There ARE jobs where working independently is a requirement. So one can't generalize that preferring to work independently is a wrong answer. It all depends on the job.

I've got customer service experience from when I was taking customer service calls at the Walmart call center. It was horrible, but job experience is job experience. My current job, fraud prevention, gave me tons of data entry experience since I have to explain why I think an order is or isn't fraud as clearly as I can in as few words as possible.

That’s actually a very substantial job that takes lots of brains.
