I know that Freddie Highmore exaggerates many of the autistic traits of the character of Dr. Shaun Murphy but it doesn't seem to only be for comedic gain, which is my problem with shows like Atypical. I might, however, be biased in that I see a lot of myself in the character of Dr. Shaun Murphy. There is this scene in the first episode where he is standing in an airport and is experiencing sensory overload and stimming by rubbing his hands together and shifting his weight from his toes to the heal of his feet. That is literally one of my stims. About a week after I started my current job I remember one of my coworkers asked me why I would rub my hands and lift up to my tip toes like that.

So, what is your opinion on The Good Doctor?

I think it's a good enough portrayal of a fictional character. I'm sure there's probably at least one real life close to Shaun Murphy person out there as far as autism traits and behavior goes.

I like it. He is a unique character, whether autistic or not, so where you may (and I do) recognize yourself in some characteristics but not at all in others, that makes him all the more real.
