The internet makes me feel stupid

Ever since I started going online Ive felt kind of numb. Well I didnt feel that way at first but I feel that way now. I dont have the patience to read. All I do is go on the internet for most of my free time. I dont know how to stop. It has sucked me in.

Well I figured out a brief solution anyways. I can give my tablet to my parents for a few days. Hopefully in those few days I wont go nuts!

Me too. I'm trying to cut down on here and reddit but it isn't working well.

Anyone more useful than me have tips for us?

I've wanted to quit the internet for the same reasons but then I would not be able to talk to the new friends I made.

Get the Babbel app and spend your time on the internet learning a foreign language. The Yabla app is also useful... and you can also watch foreign language tv. I watch the spanish news... still don't know what the hell they're saying, though.

I've found there are two types of troll on Reddit. One type is far-right and will jump on anybody they think supports "identity politics" and the like. The other is far-left and will immediately jump on anything they think vaguely supportive of capitalism or Zionism, or in any way critical of Bernie Sanders. (aside: it rather peeves me that so many people outside the US would know who Bernie Sanders is. I can tell you that most Americans have no clue who Boris Johnson is, for example.)

Both groups use the same techniques. Their favorite is to reply to a dry remark in the spirit that it was actually a naïve statement of support for something nobody else respects. Don't try to explain to explain to them what you really meant! They don't GAF they just want to troll.

Also, when posting (as opposed to commenting) the trolls will immediately start downvoting you but if your post has actual merit, then the upvotes will begin arriving in good time.

I guess I see it as more of a game. I genuinely want to earn karma while saying things I truly believe.

If you want genuine empathy, WP is probably as good a place as anywhere but of course you must always be prepared for the odd obtuse reaction.

EDIT: there is one sure way to get lots of upvotes but I probably don't need to spell that out to you!

I find the internet to be fairly useful. But social media is different beast. Using message boards or posting media on social websites, from my perspective seems almost like a waste of time. Too many people hawking their own extreme opinions on almost anything.

What I find appealing on the internet:
* Ordering items on Amazon and have them delivered right to my door.
* Searching the price of gasoline in the nearby city in order to find the cheapest gasoline.
* Translating written foreign languages into English or vice versa
* Exact spelling of words and meanings and abbreviations.
* Conversion of metrics: Such as 7 feet is the same as 2.134 meters. Or -7.2 degrees Fahrenheit is the same as -21.78 degrees Celsius which is the same as -17.42 degrees Reaumur. [That was our actual real low temperature this week outside my door.]
* What is playing at the local movie theater this week and what are the times of the showing.
* Being able to research and find a specific 300 year old book stored in a library somewhere in the world and read it.
* Find the location of somewhere and not only get directions, a map to the location but many times an actual photograph of the location.
* emails
* I have a Fitbit and it interlinks to the computer and gives me the number of steps I took each day and the equivalent of how many stories I climbed this week and also my sleep cycle.
* The ability to find a stored repair manual on almost any item, even those items that were manufactured 30 years ago and also YouTube videos showing detailed step by step instructions on how to repair an item.
* Research almost any topic imaginable.
* Weather forecast and alerts.
* One of the largest How-To Manuals on almost anything integrated into YouTube videos.

The internet can be a very useful tool many times especially if it is used to solve problems.

I started a new Reddit. I'm having different problems to on the other one. I'm not posting about politics and I'm not telling anyone my sex (women seem to attract different sorts of trolls... again I don't have to point it out to you except to say that certain pics from men are be thumbs down pretty quickly lol)

However, I just find it really addictive. Same as here. I like both places but I want to do other things with my life and I don't know if this is an aspie thing but I just can't do anything in small doses.

When it comes to football subs I get down votes from rival fans, but that's cos I wind them up, it's ok I just need to quit thinking it isn't a secret thumbs up lol.
