So I got a surprise interview call yesterday, for a local part-time minimum wage helping out with activities with older people in an assisted living facility... Doesn't sound too hard and wouldn't require relocating.

But I saw a job posted yesterday that was REALLY up my alley... Designing education programs about wildlife for the DNR... Actually designing programs and also educational brochures and signs, etc... I was EXTREMELY good at during my last jobs. Main issue is the job would require a relocation (Lansing). But the salary is nice and it's benefited. It would basically pay me to do my special interest.

But if I had to choose assuming both would want to hire me...

How far are you from Lansing? Is this a permanent position? Is it for the State of Michigan?

If it's the last two, I would definitely take the position.

I know Lansing is west of Detroit, and way east of Grand Rapids.

I'm glad you're getting good prospects, at least.

Yes, permanent and State of Michigan. I know Lansing, grew up south of Lansing, went to University there and my uncle I used to live with is Lansing area.

For this job I also found the hiring managers email and a file I wanted to submit one demonstrating an educational sign I made I couldn't because of the file format and I couldn't convert it so she did it for me... That was really sweet!

Edit: Far enough from Lansing we would have to relocate... If I was living where I was before a commute would be possible but the bedbugs and dealing with my uncle... Not again!

If there's a probationary period, then you pass the probation, you're all set in a civil service job, probably.

Research whether there's an actual civil service test for this particular position. Some civil service position, though, don't require tests.

Does it say in the ad that it's a "provisional" position?

There lots of jobs for “Assistance Payments Person,” or something like that all through Michigan.

On the State of Michigan Civil Service website.

Looks like a permanent civil service position to me.

I'd go for it.

There might be anywhere from a 6 month to 1 year probationary period. After the probationary period is over, then you get full civil service protections.

It mentioned civil service in one of the PDF files attached to the job position but I don't know much about it ...

I checked the commute time between here and Lansing and it's a bit over an hour, probably because much of it is on the interstate, I thought it would be like 2 hours.

I commute at least 1.25 hours each way. It can be over 2 hours.

You get better gas mileage on Interstates.

Well that local part-time already sent me an email saying "were pursuing other candidates". Oh well... Maybe the State job will interview me, job announcement closes Tuesday.

I looked it up and indeed Lyft is in this town... More expensive than the bus but they run more hours, more places and can probably take home groceries too.

Another thing I was wondering is how to find info on like carpools, I don't know if people in this area regularly go to Lansing, ehh....

Up late at night because hubby went to hospital again and I am worried about him...

Here's a good resource for a job in Lansing or anywhere else in Michigan. I got it by googling "carpool Lansing".

https://www.michigan.gov/mdot/0,4616,7-151-9615_11228---,00.html

Note that if you have to leave work for an emergency, the state provides a "guaranteed ride home" to people who vanpool.

As to the topic of this thread, you should pursue multiple jobs at the same time. You should probably take the first one offered, if you feel you can perform the duties. However, feel free to quit it if you get another job that you like better.

People often do commute as much as 1 hour (or more) each way, daily. A tip is that on a long train or express bus ride, or in a carpool when you are not the driver, you can often nap. Or you can sometimes do boring but necessary jobs like balancing your checkbook or deleting emails.
