I have realized something odd.

My FaceBook page seems to be more popular than I, even though I haven't posted on it in over a year. I know most of the people who do post there, and I see many of them at least once a week, yet they barely speak to me at all!

Has anyone else experienced something like this?

I have never been on FB or any social media. It seems to move connections from personal, person to person, to impersonal - like a Christmas newsletter. For those of you too young know remember, Families would send out a Christmas letter extolling the virtues of their offspring, their promotions, their ritzy vacations. :D

I do have family members who want me to join FB so I can "get all the family news." If I have family that cares enough to want me to know what is going on in their lives, they can pick up the phone, send an email, or (heaven forbid!) write a letter! 8O If they don't care that much, I don't much care to hear it all. I don't mean that in a nasty way...that's just the way it is. My life is full.

Hear! Hear!

This is how I feel, too!

Back in my day, when we wanted to talk to somebody, we walked or rode our bikes over to their house and knocked on the door. If it was too far to walk or ride, we asked to be driven over or drove over there ourselves. If it was too far to drive, we picked up the phone and dialed their number. If they didn't answer, then we wrote a letter and mailed it. Danged kids have it too easy these days!

Yes, I remember that. Walking or biking over to a friend's house to see if "Johnny" is home and can he come out and play? When people "dropped in." It is so weird now. (a cranky old lady :D )

I grew up in an apartment building in Queens.

We kids used to stay out all day from about 8-9 AM to sunset on non-school days.

I wasn't encouraged to ring the doorbell of my friend; but I could call him on the phone.

It isn't just the change in how people socialize, it's the fact that the same people who are leaving messages for me on Facebook don't seem to want to converse with me when we meet in person.

My FB account is more popular than I am.

I have over 500 "Facebook friends." I actually KNOW very few of these people. Maybe 50 at the most.

The reason for this phenomenon is that "friends of friends" often seek to "friend" you on Facebook. One friend might, say, know 10 other people whom you don't know.

And you accept the "friend" invitation. You "friend" these "friends of friends."

Even discounting the "Friend" requests, people speak to me more often through FB than they do in person.

It's almost as if I don't exist to them as a real person, but only as a Facebook identity.

Maybe you're a little scary to approach in person.

In general, people are more assertive and daring online than they are in person.

That's the "nature of the beast."
