I’m at a f*****g fitness conference having a f*****g meltdown. Spent most of the morning listening to lectures. I’m hot and in pain. Last bit at least we were doing fascial stretches and that was relaxing. Went in to their marketplace expo. Trying to look at material at booths and we’ve got people pushing f*****g carts loaded with weights up and down the aisles doing strength tests. Using my cane and I had to f*****g jump out of the way. Complained to person running the exercise and all I got was Sorry. Complained to person in charge and they said oh dear ... I blew my stack stomped out saying I’m leaving. Sitting in car cooling off. I probably will return. I have 45 minutes. f**k me!

You did the smart thing, and just got out of there in order to calm down.

Thanks! Oh man, it’s one of those days. Sitting in my car in the dark underground parking helped. Some. Went to use handicapped washroom in the hotel/conference centre. Someone else was using it which was okay. But I could hear the toilet flushing over and over again. I figured the woman must be having bowel problems. No. No, the toilet is sensor operated and if you don’t move it flushed. And splashes. Yuck!

I’ve been doing so well lately. Temperament so much calmer. It was like the old days. Calm and then boom. My husband is pretty much a pacifist. Not by nature, but he has worked hard at it. I’m a pretty firm believer in righteous indignation. If something is wrong you should be free to express that. I guess a meltdown is probably too expressive!

Thank you all. You really helped.

Home now. In bed. I have chronic pain problems and going to conferences like today is tough. We were either sitting for extended periods, at least on comfy chairs, or standing, or sitting/laying on the floor. My bad leg and foot went numb, and then later “ouch”. I’m 62 and teach fitness classes, very much part-time, to other seniors. Some are disabled in a variety of ways and most not used to exercise classes. I’m in a rural area and many are former farmers.

I can be pretty good (as in creative) with my swearing and am proficient with it in English and French! Sometimes I let loose when I’m outside working in the garden and then worry if the neighbours hear me.

Hope you are feeling better now. Also having a meltdown will have made your complaint more memorable. They

will talk about it (human nature) and it will affect the way some of them behave next time as they will be more

aware, so you have made it easier for everyone else. You have sacrificed your self for the common good, comrade,

have a biscuit.

Conferences can be a hardship on people with a disability - any disability. Seldom do presenters consider the range of accommodations that might be necessary. I once participated in a "team building" B.S. thing with a place where I worked. You were to stand in a circle. Then one at a time you were to run into the center, say something, and run back to your circle again. I could stand, but running was out of the question. It made me look like the freak in the group. How was that team-building? Maybe by excluding the freak in the group (me).

Anyway Anne, good on you for handling it as well as you could have. If there are repeat circumstances in the future, feel free to be comfortable seated and sit out any portions you need to. That thing about people racing in the aisles and you having to dodge them, that was the ultimate in ableism! Yuck!

Team building is horrible! Some colleagues went to one such gathering where they were expected to play ring-around-the-rosie! I heard one person walked out. I used to get so angry at work about the way disabled people were treated. That is in part what led to my early retirement. At least now I’m self employed.
