Someone Put a Dead Bird in my Apartment

I’m a little freaked out because when I got back from taking my dog for a walk late this morning there was a dead bird on the armrest of my sofa.

It couldn’t have gotten in anywhere, and my dog couldn’t have brought it in because she’s always on a leash and would’ve eaten it instead of just leaving it lay.

It looked as though it was very strategically placed and hadn’t died from being locked in someplace where it couldn’t get out.

My back door was unlocked, so someone must have been bold enough to come in during bright daylight when they knew I wasn’t at home.

It’s puzzling to me because I haven’t talked to any of my neighbors since I moved in about 3 months ago. It’s not like I’ve made any enemies. It was just a nasty thing to do for no apparent reason.

My son can be noisy when his cousin comes over, but no one has talked to me about it or submitted any complaints as far as I’m aware of.

I need to do a better job at keeping my doors and windows locked.

It is a good practice to lock doors and windows when you go out. It seems an odd thing to just randomly leave a dead bird like that.

We were only out for 10 minutes. I should always keep my back door locked, though. It’s somewhat secluded back there. Now I’m not going to be comfortable going out there.

It’s especially weird because I love birds, but no one here could know that, so it must just be a coincidence.

Maybe some prankster. Any kids like that in neighborhood?

Did it maybe fly through a window?

No. All my windows are new and have good screens in them. I’ve even gone through my house and double checked them.

The bird seemed to be very strategically placed. It’s wings weren’t outstretched, and it wasn’t laying in an awkward position as one might expect if it had somehow got in and flew into a wall.

It was a young bird since it still had some fuzz.

That’s probably what it was.

Do you have a fireplace? Sometimes birds will nest in the chimney and get into the house that way. We have a wood stove and have had owls and starlings get in that way. The owl seemed very young.

Any cats in the neighborhood?

No fireplace.

There’s no way a bird or cat could get into my apartment unless someone would bring it in. All of my windows are new and have new screens.

Well then, have you reported it to the police?

No, because when I was looking at it my dog realized what it was and got it. I figured that they’d think I was being idiotic and that the dog brought it in the first place.

It was probably just stupid kids. I’m trying not to be too paranoid about it.

I was gonna ask about a cat, but that topic has been covered. Always lock all your doors.

I’m going to be more careful about that from now on.

It was definitely not there before the walk? I just imagine a child finding a dead bird outside and bringing it in as a possibility? but I don't think I have enough information to know if it is a possibility.. That sounds like a very unsettling thing to find, regardless.
