Yeah I find a lot of sites are like that, such as football and soap sites. People hate it when someone is enthusiastic about anything. I'd understand in football if it was a rival team but everyone seems to have to be negative about their own team too. And with TV shows, if someone doesn't like a show they shouldn't watch it.

I saw that, too. Even on a dedicated thread to a certain player, they made ugly, negative remarks about him. I always said positive things about my favorite players. I saw a supposed "fan site" dedicated to Denis Istomin and they said some poisonous, nasty and absolutely untrue things about him. It was absolutely not the Denis Istomin I saw on court and in video interviews. He is one of the nicest guys on the tour, along with Federer and Nadal.

Every time I'm downvoted online, it subconsciously reminds me of the job interviews I failed. The friends I haven't met. The magazines that rejected me. The enemies I've made in life for being different. The other social media I've had to abandon.

Especially when it's my art work.

I put a lot into my art work and spend hours on it. I thought it was something I was talented at.

So yes, it seems petty to get upset over a single click of the mouse. Or on here, over the long silences. Or on Twitter how I joined for a whole week and nobody wanted to know.

It feels like nobody wants to know. And yes, it's easy to say 'build offline connections'. But they just patronise me. They like me because I fill a role which isn't me. I just want my art and my words to speak for themselves because that's closer to who I am inside :(

Have you considered joining a local autistic group just for social support in real life?
The people there might be more understanding.
Start small.

That's sad to hear. I always assumed that tennis being an individual/doubles game would mean that everyone liked the nice players. Or at least that it would be done in a nationalistic way with the Americans rooting for the Americans and the Russians for the Russians and the Brits with the Brits.

Judy Murray is an embarrassing mother though. She writes in the Sunday Post about Jamie and Andy all the time. Not their fault in fact I bet they find it a bit embarrassing.

Yeah an autism group might be a good idea Pepe. My main problem is social anxiety though - I find it hard to internalise the positive. What really works for me is when someone gives a specific comment, a specific compliment makes me feel good and a specific critique esp of artistic work or other work is something I can actually work on.

I don't usually downvote something online unless I find it to be extremely in poor taste, or is sexist, racist, or ablist. So I can't really figure out why people downvote something like videos that have sweet, adorable foster kittens and their mother being cared for and loved by a kind, patient man, other than the fact they are trolls and sick cat-haters. Although the upvotes and positive replies greatly outnumbered them.

I don't like Judy Murray, either. I also don't like the behavior of Novak Djokovic's parents.

Klaudiya Istomina, Denis' mother, is a much nicer person.

I love your trains! I have always wanted to collect trains but I have so much stuff I collect as it is. There was a train expo here a couple of years ago and I was thrilled!

You may be ridiculed, downvoted, slandered, trolled, etc online but you won't be stabbed, punched, killed, etc. Which means it does little to shut me up. Keep that in mind the next time it happens and be relieved that the next day, you'll still wake up to a beautiful day and the person who downvoted you can do s**t to take that away.

I was on a subreddit for awhile. Usually, the people who were downvoting were pushing a specific agenda. It was really obvious, so it didn’t bother that many people.

People on the internet tend to be more blunt with their likes and dislikes than they are in person. Even if you receive more downvotes than upvotes, it doesn’t mean you’re wrong, especially depending on the forum. I would hope to receive lots of downvotes on a Nazi forum, not that I would ever dream of joining one unless I was involved in some sort of research project.

You just have to ignore them and continue to be you. Ignore what they say about your art! Remember that lots of amazing artists weren’t fully appreciated in their day! If it bothers you too much, though, stay away from those forums.

I’ve thought about submitting artwork myself before, but I noticed that people tend to criticize more than they praise (even wonderful pieces). People are jealous (probably the #1 reason), don’t understand or appreciate styles that deviate from realism or their favorite “ism,” don’t like the subject matter, or don’t know how to offer constructive feedback in a positive way.

Thanks.

And yeah that helps a lot. I don't think it's a good idea really for art to be voted on. But I'm a hypocrite cos I do it myself (always upvotes on things I like!)

Our local art gallery only hosts the work of dead people, very famous artists and artists who are famous for other things. I need to get involved in offline art communities maybe, though.
