But of course they didn't forget my sister's!! !
And I'm the one who's not okay, right???
I'm leaving this house, I don't mind being homeless, preferable than staying with them any longer!! !

My siblings have not even mentioned my birthday in decades. I had to accept as fact the idea that as one grows older, birthdays become steadily less important.

Birthdays are sort of like Christmas in one respect — celebrating them is more for the benefit of children than adults.

Still, it would be nice to at least get a birthday card or a “Happy Birthday” phone call.

That isn’t fair.

My family never celebrates birthdays, but in that case, at least the general unfairness is fair.

I wouldn’t do anything rash. Being homeless is no joke. If possible, do something nice for yourself. Can you give yourself a present?

Thanks everyone. Yes, I'm 40, and I really expected them to mention that, but no one cares...
I'm not going to leave, at least not without prior planning, but the situation makes me so depressed...
And I've been unemployed for more than a year now, which only contributes to my depression...

It sounds like the issue is more than a forgotten birthday. You might find that re-framing the problem in your mind so you can deal with the underlying issues such as reduced independence, unemployment and the depression that results from that. The birthday, while it feels horrible, is just a symptom.

My mother, bless her heart, always remembered my birthday even after I was grown and had long left home. I found it embarrassing. I don't know why. She passed away some 20 years ago. Out of five siblings, only my next youngest brother and I exchange Christmas and birthday greetings. We live 3000 miles apart. Its a way of keeping contact more than anything else.

With four siblings, there were many conflicts and jealousy growing up and persisting into adulthood for some. I was never anyone's favorite. But I am so over that. I have found I can't move forward in life if I don't let drop completely all that old junk.

I can totally relate. I was also the black sheep. They preferred my sister, cause she was normal.

I was sort of the "polka-dotted" sheep----but I was never respected.
