Ignoring personal attacks is a wise choice, as Karamazov said. We are all, by definition, impaired in our ability to communicate.
Amity is correct that we would do better if we could participate in self-governance.
Some people have not learned to self-modulate. Ignoring outbursts is the fastest way to have things settle down. Responding to outbursts is a good tool if you want to ratchet it up. Reporting serious violations of the rules, using the report function, may be a better way to address the problem.
Mods are volunteers and have a tough job. We need to thank them for what they do and not jump all over them because you think a decision was in error, or influenced by point of view. So are we all. They are autists too and do the best they can. If you damn the mods, you endanger the structure. Who is moderating the mods? I believe they consult with each other when there are serious issues.
There are two things I noticed. 1) some posters leave the topic to attack another poster. These people remind me of six year olds. I see temporary bans as sending them to "time out." 2) some people want to pound over and over the very same point of view. This isn't against the rules, but it's boring and it prevents others from having an actual discussion, listening to the "other side" and learning from each other.
