Was the movie The Doors supposed to make you hate Morrison?

The movie portrayed him in a way, in which I hated the character so much, the way he treats everyone around him, and nearly murdered his girlfriend.

And unlike a movie like Raging Bull or even Lawrence of Arabia, for example for which makes you still generate enough sympathy for the character; this portrayal and execution of Morrison, had no sympathy from me whatsoever, and I couldn't wait for him to die.

By the end of the movie I was thinking "Thank goodness, that sadistic sonofab$%^h is dead!" But was it the movie's intention to make me feel that Jim Morrison is nothing than a piece of trash that just needed to be taken out?

Yes, as you say, he sounds like a pretty big sonofab$%^h to say the least!

And as I’m sure we both know, people who do this kind of crap have usually grown up in an environment in which it’s “normal.” Voices of sanity from the outside sometimes help, but what these people really need are time and opportunities for more constructive habits.

Makes for a dark character.

Maybe the story could have been told from one of the other band members who tries to help Jim but then decided he’s tried enough. Who then joins another band and enjoys it more, the heck with the big venues. Success always has a lot todo with luck factors and external factors.

I came away from the movie with the opposite reaction; I actually fell in love with Morrison and became a fan of the Doors.

For much of his life, James Morrison was a chubby nobody with his nose stuck in a book. Dwelling more on his early life and Aspie-ish special interests might have humanized him, making for a more interesting movie. Instead, Oliver Stone went full-tilt Rock Star.

Musicians are often flawed characters. As somebody who enjoys music I am curious about the creator of the art form. Morrison was not just a musician but he was also an artist.

The movie gives an insight into his personality/mind, his artistic brilliance but also his dreadful flaws. The purpose of a good biographical movie is to show the character of the person "warts and all".

The band took their name from the title of Aldous Huxley's book The Doors of Perception, itself derived from a line in William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: "If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is: infinite".

Oh okay, I can see wanting to show the person's flaws and all, but what was the message of the movie in the end?

If the message was not the world is a better place without Jim Morrison, then what was it?
