I think there's an environmental factor too.
Stress and toxins leading to epigenetic changes in the sperm or ova before conception, that sort of thing.
So that a lot of the more severe autism cases appear to come "out of the blue" in families with no history.

I think there's still a lot of work to be done on understanding the epigenetics of autism. Toxins/triggers have not been readily identified to date because we need to look at transgenerational effects - exposure of the father (in the case of sperm) or the grandmother on the mother's side during pregnancy (in the case of ova).
Some are still hung up on theories about exposure of the autistic individual (eg the debunked vaccine link).

Good point, the epigenetic factors can't be tested/factored in any simple gene test. Modern environmental conditions could be contributing to the rise in autism diagnosis.

That's what I'm thinking, though I'm not certain as many have expressed that the rise in autism diagnoses may be explained by changes in diagnostic criteria and other factors. So nobody can tell for certain.

Some discussion of this in another thread:

If genetic engineering is used for good then it could potentially offer real equality between people, not the fake identity politics one based on keeping people down & reliant on others in our senior hierarchy to negotiate for a few crumbs on our behalf.

Don`t we all deserve to be as smart as the smartest people
Don`t we all deserve to have the best communication skills of the best NT communicators
Why should we all suffer from social anxiety
Why should we suffer sensory problems
Why should many of us be condemned to a lower life span, poor job prospects & poverty because we cant work
Why shouldnt we all be allowed to form sucessful relationships with others like NT`s

I'm not sure about this, the idea of trying to improve the human race so that we all get the best that we deserve doesn't sit right with me, as ideal as it sounds on the surface. Over and over again when we try to do that kind of thing we find unintended negative consequences. Usually it turns out that nature knows better than we do.

There is a good reason why some people are prone to anxiety, for example, just as there is a good reason why some people have narcissistic traits and others autistic traits. The natural diversity of humanity has arisen out of a powerful evolutionary process and we mess with that at our peril.

Maybe you misunderstood what I meant curing disorders is not the same as “improving the human race”.

Giving an ordinary person superhuman strength is not the same as therapy for someone with a muscle wasting condition that can’t lift a pencil.

It’s the same with neuro developmental disorders which autism is. Many have intellectual disability, if you could through gene therapy raise that to normal that would be a good thing.

Having an anxiety disorder is not the same as having normal flight or fight reactions in dangerous circumstances.

There is a difference between improving on normal and raising impairment to working.

For those curious how knowledge of autism genes could be used can examine how traditional Ashkenazi jewish communities do gene testing prior to arranged marriages.

My understanding is that if a boy and girl both carry a gene for one of 8 different genetic diseases then they are not permitted to marry.

That's interesting.
I wonder why Ashkenazi Jews have so many genetic issues, they must have had a much reduced gene pool at some time?
