Social media should change how they deal with mental health

I mean, as long as it is not censorship for expressing one's opinions, and the people have been given sufficient warnings and opportunities to repent, cutting off their access to social media platforms could not possibly happen quickly enough!

Opinions... everything is an opinion. If I said someone deserves to get jailed for their horrific evil opinions, that's my opinion.

But so far, when I've expressed such an opinion I've been given a warning (WP + elsewhere) saying I am not allowed to express my opinion.

Clearly, not all opinions are allowed. The question is then, which opinions to allow and which opinions to ban.
Ie. Trump-supporters won't allow anti-Trump opinions on their social media websites.

Nobody really cares about 100 % free speech. The only question regarding free speech is the degree of free speech allowed under which circumstances.

"Free Speech" is a myth, except in the context of the First Amendment, which states only that the government cannot prosecute you for what you say (other laws place limits on threatening, seditious, and inflammatory speech).

Sure, say what you want, and the government cannot throw you in prison for (most of) what you say; but you can still legally get bounced out of a redneck bar for saying Dale Earnhart cheated in every one of his NASCAR events.

Reason why websites don't allow suicide talk is because it's to avoid suicide bait.

Do you mean threats of suicide to lure people into exploitive relationships?

Or do you mean the fear that suicide may be contagious?

Or ... ?

People were doing that on the live stream.

Those are who should be banned and spoken to by the police.

What I mean by it is idiots telling people who are in that state (so it's not banter between healthy NTs - debatably bad enough on its own) to kill themselves. So they were telling him (and this is the nicest eg I can think of and the most clearly understandable) 'get on with it'.

I have the lower member of youtube membership: not signed up for youtube but have a google account. So I don't think I could report them. Other people did though and gave them grief for talking like that.

Telling people to go kill themselves or telling them to go right ahead when they post they want to kill themselves. This is illegal activity.

And yes, suicide is "contagious." Suicides can go up in a group if a peer commits suicide.

I didn't know that.

I hope they get done for suicide baiting & hate speech by the police then.

Those garbage people sometimes get banned.

They need no place to vent such opinions.

It's a sad inditement on society that they could probably say them over the phone/zoom etc if they were banned from social media, as these people tend to have more friends than allistic mentally ill people (& autistic mentally ill people with social needs) do

Kind of agree as someone who's come off certain social media sites due to this.

Trouble is it requires a degree of self awareness/mental health to be able to do this.

Guy in question was always a bit 'odd'. I wonder if I was the only one who could tell he was mentally ill rather than putting on a show? A lot of people mean to him or laughed at him. I kept my distance til the end, hoping for the best.

I don't like the language of punishment around it all though. I hope the message he gets isn't exactly the same as he'd get if he did other violations. I hope it says something to the effect of 'for the sake of your own health, this account has been suspended, please take care of yourself' not 'you are banned from youtube for posting inappropriate content'.

Even doing bad things and getting my twitter suspended, due to my mental health I felt worse about it than I think I should have. I felt like it wasn't saying 'you violated our rules' or even 'you said a bad thing' but 'you are an irredeemable person'. Mental health conditions can affect how you feel about being 'told off' and the self hate that you put into that.

Social media is worse for people's mental health than practically anything. You're not a product for advertisers using surveilance to satisfy their contracts. Neither am I. You're not a numbered database item to be subjugated by a nosy government either. Me neither.

Just saying they should change implies some kind of rationale for the existence of social media. Lies on Facebook directly resulted in the election of an attempted dictator & all the deaths that happened on his watch. Facebook enabled Trump to spread Nazi propaganda. Twitter reserved an account for this for years. Amazon Web Services hosted Parler long enough to spread enough hate speech for this to happen.

Social media is an inexcusable mistake, we built the internet to exchange information.
