No, there have not been many artists, female or not, who are capable of that in my time. A couple of American artistes who come to mind are Aretha Franklin and Dolly Parton. I also have been thoroughly impressed over the years by Danny Elfman's versatility and the band Green Day's ability to continue evolving as most individuals do as they come of age and grow older.

Deborah Harry is another great example of this. I have been glad to see her continue to write and perform, as she seemed to slip between the cracks of 1980's pop music in the States over the years, until more recently. Sadly, most Americans do not allow ourselves to be known for acceptance and polity. I still think what happened to George Michael in LA years ago was absolutely ridiculous.

I would say that Cyndi Lauper is quite likely to be on the spectrum because I can tell her humour is a mask. If you watch clips of her on the chat shows from the past, you maybe able to see what I can see. I notice because I often mask in the same way. A sort of "Acting thick" mask when one really is pretty intelligent behind the mask to pull it off so effectively.
I can dig that. She is unquestionably a graceful, yet rugged, individualist and doesn't project a style which she wants to convey as much as she simply expresses her personality through her fashion and art. I can also personally relate to masking feelings/personality/intellect with humor to sort of diffuse the sharper aspects of my personality as I am either meeting strangers or acting as the newcomer to a social group. It's one of the best ways I've found to gain acceptance from such groups, or at the very least mask those facets of my personality [re: AS] which people sometimes find confusing and/or off-putting.
