And I like it.

I thought I would put this in the haven because it's about how I feel, but it's not really a rant.

I feel like I've reached a nice plateau. I'm turning 40 this year.

When you're in your 20s you're always trying to prove yourself. Get good grades in college, pass that interview, charm that guy you like. I felt like you've always got to be improving and trying and reaching forwards.

Now I'm living in a house I like with 2 great pets and a job that covers my bills and allows me a little bit of spending money. I haven't had to deal with people for a whole year and I get to be myself.

It's awesome.

I don't have to reach for anything or push myself or try and be better. I'm free.

I agree. That's a nice feeling.

Ouch! I'm in my twenties and you got me there. Should I try to take it easy?

Glad to hear you're doing well!

Well, if I hadn't made an effort, I wouldn't be where I am now.

But with age comes experience and people seem to respect me more. So I don't need to prove myself as much. I need to keep learning, but I have some knowledge to rely on now from what I've already learned. It's not as stressful.

Sounds like a good place to be, hurtloam. The freedom to live your life as you please, do what you wish, when you wish ... live as stress free as possible. Who wouldn’t love that? :)

Congrats, Hurtloam!

I hope you can rephrase the notion of "feeling irrelevant" into "feeling independent", or "feeling successful".

You are both.

I've been independent my whole life, but it doesn't get anyone's back up anymore. I can mostly fly under the radar now. It's different.

I'm old enough to be seen to be "set in my ways" and I am now beyond lecturing.

Unless they mistake me for being younger than I am. I look younger which is a blessing and a curse. I can tell when someone is talking down to me because they don't realise how old I am.

You are someone special. You are not irrelevant.

Yes, it is good to be independent. :)
