It was meant as a compliment.

But...

some famous person (forget who) said "there are three stages of life: youth, middle age, and 'you're looking WONDERFUL!'".

It is at worst a microaggression. There are much worse ageism problems. Ageism is still an acceptable prejudice.

It is strange how the same people who pick on me about my age, my weight, and my baldness also claim that I am their favorite person whenever birthdays and Christmas come around . . .

NTs give out compliments that are really insults or microaggressions all the time. Like when they say "that dress makes you look really nice", it sounds to me like they're really saying "you only look good when you get dressed up, the rest of the time you look terrible."

"You write really well for a left-handed person".

And of course there's always "You don't look autistic".
