How does a crazy cult represent conservatism? The Waco incident is remembered by libertarians as an example of government overreach, not because they liked the guy who is alleged to have had a relationship with one minor.

How does it not represent conservatism?

Anyway this thread was supposed to be about Europe let's not get sidetracked.

I think it might go in cycles. It was considered normal for men to wear Speedos in the 70s and 80s, now it is assumed to be a "queer" thing. I don't think history works that linear like some people tend to think. And of course, sexy female fictional characters are becoming unacceptable too. And I don't believe it was like that before the 60s everything or everyone was overly-prudish (applying to both Europe and the USA), it was just seen as more something to keep in the private closet. But it's not like people didn't enjoy sex.

I think you may be right. I was there in the 60s, saw the permissive society and all. Seemed to be a case of "if the Establishment hates it, let's do it." So it couldn't last.

Interesting that the OP cites public nudity as an example of sexual behaviour. A lot of its proponents at the time used to insist that it was nothing of the kind. It was a strange era.

I disagree that public nudity isn't sexual. There's no legitimate non-sexual reason for a young woman to be topless on a public beach. The most practical thing would be a tank suit as that would protect her from premature aging and skin cancer.

And that's where your assumptions disagree with continental European, especially German, culture.
Public nudity in German culture is asexual. Old fat people and small children run naked to enjoy the sun without anything touching their skin and that's considered normal.

I think American culture lacks non-sexual celebration of human body, to the point it seems hard to imagine it at all. The attitude towards breastfeeding is one of effects of this.

I can only speak for Spain (in continental Europe) which I have visited a lot over the years. Franco’s Spain was far more uptight, the country has become far more relaxed and liberal over the years.

I'm a consevative, how do the Branch Davidians represent me in any capacity.

You can continue with the Europe discussion as you wish but don't throw statments just like that and not expect a response.

I admire your sentiment.

It's my impression that many for whom the defense of gun rights is a sacred duty see David Koresh as a martyr. If I'm wrong then so be it.

This subject was targeted at the post Cold War period.

It seems to me that some things such as public nudity were more widely accepted in the late 80s than nowadays. I believe I can talk with some authority about changes in the US but it's generally accepted that Europeans are more relaxed about sexual matters than are Americans. I am speaking of continental Europe not the UK (which would be a separate topic I think).

Let's propose, nevertheless, that Europe (both West and East) has gotten more prudish. In which case, I can think of a few possible causes:

1.) An increase in religious practice in the East.
2.) The internet, social media, etc.
3.) Increased ethnic diversity, for example, being sexually liberated might be easier if everyone you know is a light-skinned Lutheran, but becomes more challenging when many of your social contacts are darker skinned Muslims.
4.) A general increase in sex aversion over the last decade or so, especially affecting "Generation Z".

But this is all speculation for me. Any thoughts on this from people who live in Europe and can remember that far back, or think they have a good idea who things were then?

I think your speculation isn’t based on anything concrete.

One major thing that may have affected sexual practices is HIV that spread starting in the 80s.

I think it is fascinating how easily desensitized someone can become to nudity.

In about a week of looking at nude people it wouldn’t mean a thing.

People who think it is weird are actually the weird ones.

In Australia we have very warm seasons relative to the northern hemisphere so I see plenty of "fatties" half naked for about half the year.

But you are right on one point. 3/4 of the population look terrible when they take their shirts off. but it's the one quarter who have washboard abs (for males) and thin slender figures (females) who get all the publicity on the media.

The body-positive movement push overweight bodies in people's faces. We smile and grin pretending they are making waves. In reality it reminds those of us somewhere in the middle that we need to eat less and exercise more.

Forget about Franco. Same applies from 1990s onward.

Otherwise, all the people living in tribes that run wearing only necklaces wouldn't be able to function at all  But that's our past, too. That's our nature. If nudity is common, it becomes nothing special.

Martyr is a rather dramatic word. I think that mostly the incident is referred simply as a case of government overreach.

Ironic that we only see and celebrate slender or more fit looking people in entertainment.

There could be various other factors contributing to the potential shift in attitudes towards public nudity and sexual matters in Europe. Here are some additional ideas to consider:

1.) Changing gender dynamics: As conversations about gender equality and women's rights have become more prominent, people might be more conscious of the objectification of women and its consequences. This awareness could result in a more critical view of public nudity or sexual displays.

2.) Globalization and cultural exchange: With increasing global connectivity, people are exposed to various cultures and norms, which may affect their attitudes. The interaction between different cultural perspectives could lead to a gradual shift in attitudes towards public nudity and sexuality.

3.) The influence of media and popular culture: Movies, TV shows, and other forms of media can shape societal attitudes over time. As the content and messaging in popular media evolve, so do people's perceptions and values regarding nudity and sexual matters.

4.) Political climate and legislation: Changes in the political landscape and the introduction of new laws may impact attitudes towards nudity and sexuality. For example, governments may introduce stricter regulations on public nudity or sexual content in the media, which could lead to a more conservative environment.

5.) Public health awareness: Increased awareness of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the importance of sexual health might contribute to more cautious attitudes towards sex and nudity.

6.) Shifts in generational values: Each generation develops its own set of values and beliefs, which can be influenced by factors like education, upbringing, and the socio-cultural environment. These generational shifts might result in changing attitudes towards public nudity and sexuality.

These are just a few possibilities that could be at play in the changing attitudes towards public nudity and sexual matters in Europe. Understanding the full range of factors requires considering the unique historical, cultural, and socio-political contexts of different European countries and regions.

Or it could be changing back to a sex-negative view but this time it is coming from a different direction and some other different factors are at play.

But men can be just as objectified today as women are but not for the same reason. They just don't call it that.
