Well. It's official. I handed in my resignation. I still have to work my notice, he was insistent on that, but I may just show up not wearing uniform. What you gonna do? Fire me?

:P

At least it's only a week.

That's the ticket.

Wow , you made a good move there. Were you doing programming?

Not at my (now former) job, no.

I know some basic code, but nothing impressive. Just HTML and how to add CSS. Granted, rather broken lines of HTML. I've used Processing before, although I admit I wasn't a fan. At one point I tried to code in C# but it had issues. I attempted to create a score system that would add points (or not add points) depending on the selected answer.

Whilst it added the points to the score number, I ran into a problem where it would continue to add points after the program reset. So you'd restart the game and still have however many points you had last time and it would continue adding to that value. Unfortunately, I ran out of time on that project and never figured out how to add a clause to the code that would reset the value when the user selected the retry button.

My job was in graphic design. I was primarily superimposing designs to show how they'd look in a real life setting. This would include distorting and morphing the graphics to show how they'd look in a 3D space. For example, a design on a bottle would be stretched accordingly to show what it would look like curved around the bottle. Clients would ask to see how it would look, then ask for edits to the design and for this to be updated in the mock-up. Then they would pass on the design to their superiors for approval.

However, I was also in charge of running an industrial sized printer. This was the trickier part of the job (at least for me).

Good luck. Finish your time out, keep your head down and your mouth closed. No point in burning any bridges now; you are not in a position to say f you (not saying you would consider it, but you don't want to blurt it out from being plain fed up). You have no job lined up (I believe); you may need your current employer to vouch for you.

I recently left my job without any notice whatsoever. Given my mental state, I didn’t have a choice. I don’t regret it at all.

My notice period is going to be awkward. It starts tomorrow. Personally, I see it going one of three ways.

- Lots of questions.

- The silent treatment because people don't know how to react to my presence after seeing me breakdown.

- People pretending it didn't happen for the sake of reduced awkwardness.

I won't rock the boat. I'll try to be calm and diplomatic. Can't help but feel bad for my supervisor who has to train someone new yet again from scratch.

The future is quite uncertain but unfortunately I didn't have much of a choice in this situation.

I have to wonder how I'll look back on this time. Certainly I wonder what's next. I am part excited and part terrified. Can I turn my life around? I would like to think so.

I very much doubt that.
You are a very old woman after all. 8O

Lost Dragon.

As you're in England, I bet that people will try and ignore what happened and not mention it. You know what English people are like: stiff upper lip, don't cause a scene and don't talk about emotions for any reason.

I think it'll be fine, it's better if they keep quiet.

Also when I was pushed out of my job due to office politics I basically told them to f**k themselves (not in those words) and then I got the best job I ever had in my life. So that was double the insult to them

So who knows, this might lead to better things. Not necessarily a job.

So. I showed up.

My desk was a mess. Someone had left the remains of fast food all over the place. Clearly it was assumed I wasn't coming back.

I saw a bunch of terms that I'd used in my notice left up on Google on my supervisor's computer. Clearly my boss didn't understand what I'd written and had probably asked my supervisor to look up the terminology. Everyone was confused why I was there. I'd put in a request to see a copy of my contract and asked if it was possible to take garden leave on the basis of mental health. When my boss responded by simply stating the length of my notice period, I'd figured he was expecting me to work the notice. However, what he meant was that he'd accepted my request. I handed in my uniform and wished everyone well as I left the building.

The bridge is likely a bonfire with my old workplace, so I think my best course of action is to focus on building up my freelance business. Likely do some volunteering. Get some decent sources for references. My supervisor said he'd see me around in the future, but I think we all knew that was a lie said out of politeness.

Oh I'm glad you are out of there. That boss doesn't sound like the best of communicators. That sounds like you left in a very dignified way, well done.

I think that sounds a good way to move forwards. Freelancing is great, I like working for myself. And volunteering is great, people tend to be nice in volunteer work. Yes, the freelancing and volunteer jobs can be your referees, you can gloss over the job that you left if anyone asks, which they probably won't.

Well done, you handled that very well! (I've done this sort of thing a lot btw- worked in crappy places and left for various reasons)

A good phrase to cover an awkward leaving situation of a job is 'my job was discontinued'. Something vague like that.

My former boss suggested mental health leave to me... I declined as my brief absence was not going to make the company less toxic. I wouldn't relax in the face of a return. After I resigned I took a couple months off then started volunteering and working PT for "fun". It took me a year and a half to build up momentum for my next full-time adventure. It was a bit nerve wracking, but in retrospect it worked out just fine. It seems you have a sense of that already... you'll find your way... or it will find you.
