WTF I I’m in bed without my glasses but this sounds like some 4chan propaganda BS , I read a little of the article and found two flaws in the explanation straight away , 3 brackets together are piss easy to search for on a search engine and the photo of the tweet saying that the echo is coded language when the f*****g tweet has the hashtag holohoax , what a sneaky nazi bastard

It is commonly used that way, yes. I have even (though not recently) seen examples on WrongPlanet.

For example, someone might say “the (((bankers))) are keeping us down”. The brackets indicate that they aren’t actually talking about bankers, but rather using the antisemitic trope that Jewish people as a whole are connected to the banking system. They might also put them around any Jewish person’s name to draw attention to their Jewishness (like (((Soros))) or (((Epstein))) or whatever). Antisemites initially did this as a way of subtly communicating with each other, but that became less useful as people became aware of it.

That doesn’t mean that every use of triple brackets is antisemitic. It can be clear from context that they are supposed to indicate a hug. But “(((Natalie Portman)))” could mean “I want to hug Natalie Portman” or “Natalie Portman is one of those Jews”, so it’s important to be careful in such cases.

Wow! I just read a bit more. That's crazy. I guess all the members I've been hugging since I've started WP should be offended. Ah well, I don't think I've been called an antisemite so that's just one more crime to add to my rap sheet.

Whatever next?

Knowing my luck, it'll be the :jester: icon denotes White Supremacy.

Thanks , Should I stop using them?

In fact, I'm gonna have too as there are a lot of Jewish members here, I wonder if I've hugged a Jewish member and they thought I was being cryptic. :?:

^ That's exactly why I thought it was 4chan BS, that symbol was originally pushed by 4chan as a joke to see how far it would go.

Some amusing and ironic history about the triple brackets. The triple brackets were used by very small community - not much by 4chan in this case, mainly the Stormfront-sphere - until someone made a couple of web browser extensions.

One extension would parse any webpage visited and replace certain words eg. instances of "white" with "jew" and similar substitutions. Such that the ever common news articles at the time "The Unbearable Whiteness of <Activity X/Institution Y>" would appear as "The Unbearable Jewishness of ..." Cue screenshots, hilarity etc. Making a political point with a sledgehammer, but still amusing.

The other extension did something similar and put triple brackets around any Jewish surnames, which tended to turn any wikipedia page about certain political topics into a sea of triple brackets. Both browser extensions were quickly banned from anything official, decried and the media made a small fuss about it. Then the Twitterati got wind of it and their popularity exploded. It was mainly the efforts of anti-racists or anti-anti-semites using the brackets around their own names/avatars to "fight back" that has lead to their staying power. For a couple of years pretty much every left wing profile on twitter was sporting the brackets, you might even see some today on defunct accounts.

I know what that post means ^^^^ but I had no idea about any of this with hugs.

Thanks for the explanation Walrus. I don't know what 4chan is and I've never used or even seen Twitter, so I must be out of the loop. I think I used to put four (((( most of the time to make a bigger hug but if I ever used three it was never my intent to hurt anyone. I hadn't even seen ((( used anywhere until I came to WP, and I remember asking people what it meant. I think it was actually a Jewish member who told me it meant hugs and they didn't mention anything else.
